What we’re about
This Meetup is for the Pennsylvania Chapters and affiliated organizations of the North Country National Scenic Trail to invite people to hike the trail with them in Pennsylvania, and to invite NCT enthusiasts to the meetings, trail work sessions, outreach events, and trail-related social activities that they plan. All are welcome to join in.
Although the Meetup is geographically based in Clarion, about in the center of the state's trail range, volunteers from the Allegheny National Forest, Clarion, Butler, and Wampum NCTA chapters, as well as the Davis Hollow Cabin at Moraine, the Butler Outdoor Club, and the Rachel Carson Trails Conservancy will all be posting information about their planned activities.
Three hundred miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail wind their way through Pennsylvania, from the New York to the Ohio borders. You can find a good general description of the route of the NCT through the state, as well as links to maps and the chapters' websites here on the NCTA's Pennsylvania page https://northcountrytrail.org/trail/states/pennsylvania/

- ANF Chapter Introductory Backpack HikeNeeds location
Join us for our annual introductory backpack hike! On this hike we will get tips on backpacking and backpacking equipment. Should you need it, we will have some equipment available to borrow courtesy of the Forest Service.
Our meeting time is September 13th, 10 AM at the Henrys Mill, Rt 666 Trailhead. It’s located on Rt 666 at N 41°38.158’ W 079° 02.569’ about 3.5 miles south of Rt 948 on the SE side of the bridge over the Tionesta Creek. You can also follow this link to the spot on the NCTA interactive map. At the meeting spot, we’ll hand out any needed equipment and answer questions before carpooling to our starting point, the Minister Rd Trailhead. Equipment available to borrow includes: backpacks, sleeping bags, sleeping pads, sleeping bag liners, stoves, camp pots, and 2 person tents. You should bring your own food, water, bowls, cups, silverware, and a method of filtering water.
From the Minister Rd Trailhead, we’ll hike back to Henrys Mills over 2 days, for a total mileage of 10.3 miles.
Please come prepared for the hike dressed in appropriate layers for the weather. Try to minimize the weight that will be put into your pack. This is a true backpacking trip. All your gear, clothing, food, and water will need to fit in your backpack. We encourage you to participate in this inaugural event if you would like to try backpacking or learn more about backpacking.
We can accommodate a total of ten hikers at this event. The first ten to fill out and submit this form, Intro to Backpacking, will be accepted for the hike. (Each hiker must fill out a form.) Once accepted, you will receive a confirmation email from the ANF Chapter. Hikers after the first 10 will also receive a confirmation email, but will be put on a waitlist. Within a day or so, you’ll receive a second email letting you know that you are in the group of ten that have been accepted for the hike, or that you are in the waitlist group. The email will include details about clothing and equipment that you should bring on the hike to allow you time to prepare for the backpack.
Hope to see you there!
