What we’re about
Independent theatre a/perture cinema brings the most wonderful (and whimsical/weird/wild) films to downtown Winston-Salem, including lots of gems that you might otherwise never see. Let this club give you an excuse to come out once a month and explore what the silver screen has to offer.
We'll see one of the movies that's playing on the second Thursday of every month and—if you have the time and interest!—head to the coffee shop next door to discuss (to be honest, this part is the most fun!). To allow everyone to attend (and responsibly go to work on Friday) we'll always pick something that screens around 6pm.
Event dates will be shared well in advance,* while final film selection and showtimes will be posted about one week prior to the event—we can't choose a film until after a/perture posts what's screening, after all!
*Dates are sometimes shifted in the summer when travel and vacation is more common.

November Movie Night (11/13) - "Bugonia" @ 6:15pm
Aperture Cinema, 311 W 4th St, Winston-Salem, NC, USFilms by Yorgos Lanthimos tend to be bleak, dark, and in their own way, deeply funny. The Academy Award-winning (Poor Things, The Favorite) Greek filmmaker has settled into a groove with his respective muses, Emma Stone and Jesse Plemmons, who here explore another characteristically dark element of humanity in Bugonia. This time, Lanthimos teams up with a former satire writer to pen this cutting send-up of a potentially all-too-real current day United States. And what's more—it's actually a remake of an early 00's Korean film!
Chances are good that not everyone will LIKE this film, but it'll certainly give lots to talk about!
And: You're still very welcome to come to Washington Perk and chat about the movie if you've already seen it!Some notes about this meetup:
- Meeting Up & Talking After: Once you have your ticket, take the hallway to the right off the main entrance (past the men's restrooms/on the way to the lower-level theaters) to the members "ta/ke out" section—there are some chairs and a small area where we usually say hello to one another before heading into the movie (especially if it's your first time!). Someone will be there from ~15 minutes before the film until just before showtime. If you arrive late, just head into the film and you can join us after—we go next door to the Washington Perk coffee shop to discuss.
- Please update your RSVP if you can't make it—this helps with a few things, including how many people we're keeping an eye out for—and sometimes lets people use your ticket if you can't!
- Recommended: purchasing your ticket online ahead of time; this lets a/perture know if more people than expected are coming, AND keeps you from waiting in line if you don't want concessions.
- And remember: You do NOT need to be a serious cinephile to join our group—but we hope you're open to talking about your ideas anyway, and learning from the insights of others!
- Parking Info from a/perture (there's a parking garage right behind the theatre—and a/perture provides a $4 coupon for your stay!)

Two conspiracy obsessed young men kidnap the high-powered CEO of a major company, convinced that she is an alien intent on destroying planet Earth. Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone reunite for their fourth feature collaboration with this remake of cult South Korean film Save the Green Planet!
“It is a joy to watch Lanthimos and his incredible cast and crew aim high and succeed at every turn, reminding us of how rewarding it is to emotionally and intellectually invest in films that challenge us, provoke us and intentionally make us uncomfortable.” ~ Mina Takla, AwardsWatch25 attendees
