Ciné Club
·OnlineOnlineJoin a group of cinéphiles online for a discussion in French of a French film with English subtitles. Our film this month is La Rafle (2010) a film by Rose Bosch with Jean Reno, Melanie Laurent and Gad Elmaleh. Watch it for free on Kanopy prior to our discussion.
Questions which will start our conversation -1.
12. Quelle est l'importance de la mémoire historique dans le récit du film ?Since the end of World War II, the culture of France celebrated the exploits of the brave members of the resistance but was largely silent about the impact of the widespread collaboration with the Nazis under the Vichy regime.
All of that changed in 1995 when Jacque Chirac officially apologized for the participation of the French state in "the criminal folly of the occupiers", including the July 1942 Vel d'Hiv roundup, during which 4,500 French police arrested 13,000 Parisian Jews who were then deported to Auschwitz.
Our film this month is part of that overdue recognition. La Rafle (The Round Up), is a film that "while remaining truthful to events offers a glimmer of hope in the face of unspeakable oppression". You'll watch the film on your own: view it for free on Kanopy. For more details, write to cine-club@AFnorthshore.org.
