About us
Welcome! We’re the 20s/30s Committee of the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Western MA Chapter — a fun, friendly group for people in their 20s & 30s who love the outdoors and want to explore Western Mass and New England with others.
Whether you’re new to hiking, just moved to the area, or have years of outdoor experience, you’ll find a welcoming community here. We organize group hikes, paddles, ski trips, campouts, social gatherings, trail work days, and more — all with a focus on community, inclusivity, and shared adventure.
You don’t need to be an AMC member to join our Meetup group or come to events (though we love it when you become one!). Most of our activities are free or low-cost and are led by trained volunteers who are excited to share their passion for the outdoors.
Join us to explore new trails, meet like-minded folks, and build lasting connections — both on and off the trail.

Audience: 20’s & 30’sDescription: **Rescheduled Join AMC Western Mass 20s/30s for our third book club meetup! Either hike with us or meet us at the summit of Mount Holyoke on August 5th to discuss our next selection, which is the book Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Following the life cycle of sweetgrass, Kimmerer shares a collection of indigenous wisdom, science and personal stories that offer hope for our relationship with the natural world. If you do not have a copy, physical copies are available at local libraries and bookstores throughout western MA as well as in eBook and audiobook form.
Those who wish to hike will meet at Hockanum Road at the base of Mount Holyoke in Hadley , MA. Hikers will follow Taylor's Notch Trail (2.3 miles roundtrip) which has a steady elevation gain of 705 ft. Pace will be brisk enough for conversation and slow enough for us to stay together. Those who wish to drive can meet us in the parking area at the summit. Parking at the summit is $5 for MA license plates and $20 for out of state plates but please reach out if this is a barrier.
We will enjoy 360 summit views and a book discussion at the top, then return the way we came back to the parking lot.
This meetup is open to all, whether or not you have finished the book. Interest in the book is the only prerequisite! ****

We’ll be hiking a pleasant loop around the area with great views of the Quarry, a small summit, and through the forest. Starting from the Turkey Hill Rd trailhead we’ll quickly make our way to the overlook with great views of the Quarry. From there we’ll continue along the summit trail, climbing a small summit and enjoying views of nearby hills to the west. Finally, our route takes us through the forest looping around via the Ravine, Freda’s, and Kohl trails. Towards, the end we’ll enter the Quarry and admire it once more from a new perspective before returning to the start. The total distance is 2-3 miles with ~500 ft of elevation gain. We’ll hike at a relaxed pace with the main goal of enjoying the scenery! Expect to be on the trail for 1.5 – 2 hours. While relatively flat, our route covers a variety of terrain including rocks, gravel, and the potential for mud. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
After the hike, we’ll head to a nearby spot in Northampton or Florence (TBD) for food/drinks, totally optional, but a great way to keep the conversation going!
