This week, we’re taking on the Paulina Peak Trail. A steep and sweaty climb to the highest point in Newberry National Volcanic Monument. We’ll work our way through the forest, climb along the edge of the caldera, question a few of our recent life choices, and eventually reach one of the best panoramic viewpoints in Central Oregon.

From the summit, we’ll look down over Paulina Lake and East Lake and out toward Bend, the high desert, Broken Top, and the Three Sisters. On a clear day, the views seem to go on forever.

We’ll hike at a moderate but purposeful pace, with plenty of opportunities to regroup, drink water, catch our breath, and emotionally prepare for the next hill. This is a legitimately challenging hike. Please make sure you’re comfortable with sustained climbing, uneven terrain, and more than three hours on the trail.

Elevation gain: Approximately 1,617 feet
Estimated time: Around 3.5 hours
Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Potential side effects: Sweating, heavy breathing, dramatic summit photos.

## Where We’re Meeting

We’ll meet outside the Paulina Visitor Center at 10:00 AM before caravanning a short distance to the Paulina Peak Trailhead.
Please arrive a few minutes early so you have time to park, use the restroom, and meet the group.

We’ll wait until 10:15 AM, then promptly head toward the trailhead and start hiking.

If you’re running late, please message me through Meetup.

Once we leave the visitor center, reception may be limited.
The meeting location is approximately 45 minutes south of Bend.

## Parking and Passes

A recreation pass is required. The day-use fee is $5 per vehicle.
Accepted passes include the Northwest Forest Pass, America the Beautiful Pass, Senior Pass, Military Pass, and Access Pass.
Please bring your pass or be prepared to purchase a day-use pass.

## Bring Your Hiking Survival Kit

Bring sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes, plenty of water, snacks or a light lunch, sunscreen, and layers for changing mountain weather.
Trekking poles are highly encouraged if steep climbs and descents tend to make your knees file formal complaints.
Binoculars are also welcome for spotting wildlife, distant mountain peaks, or the section of trail that just tried to destroy you.
There is no potable water at the trailhead, so arrive fully stocked.
Dogs are welcome but must remain leashed and should be comfortable hiking around other people and dogs.
Come climb a volcano, earn the view, meet some new people, and add a little unnecessary vertical suffering to your weekend.

Join us for a relaxed, walkable brewery crawl through downtown Bend.

We’ll visit three stops:

1. Bend Brewing Company
Beers to try: Metolius Golden Ale, Tropic Pines IPA, or Outback Amber

2. Deschutes Brewery Public House
Beers to try: Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Fresh Squeezed IPA, or Black Butte Porter

3. McMenamins Old St. Francis School
Beers to try: Ruby Ale, Hammerhead, or Terminator Stout

We’ll spend about one hour at each location, with only a few minutes of walking between stops.

Beer is optional. Food and nonalcoholic drinks are available at each location.

We’ll have a conversation circle set up, with some light snacks and drinks with optional prompts for anyone who wants to join in. You are absolutely not obligated to participate, share, or say anything personal. You can join the circle, listen, pass on any prompt, or just hang out nearby.
