About us
Canberra Horror Hang Outs 🩸🎃
Love horror but want more than just movies or books? Canberra Horror Hang Outs is a social Meetup group for horror fans who want to connect, play, explore, and have fun together outside the cinema and book club.
This group is designed as a natural crossover for members of Canberra Horror Movie Group and Canberra Horror Book Club, as well as anyone else in Canberra who enjoys horror-themed fun and friendly company.
We’ll be hosting a wide variety of events, both in person and online, including (but not limited to):
🎬 Online “watch together” movie nights
💬 Online discussion groups
🎮 Horror VR experiences
🧠 Trivia nights
🔐 Escape rooms
🕹️ Board games and casual gaming
🧺 Picnics and relaxed social catch-ups
👻 Other spooky or horror-adjacent activities
You don’t need to be a hardcore horror expert, just someone who enjoys the genre and wants to meet like-minded people in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Events will range from low-key social hangouts to more immersive horror experiences, so there should be something for everyone.
If you already attend Canberra Horror Movie Group or Canberra Horror Book Club, this is a great way to keep the conversations going and get to know people beyond screenings and discussions. If you’re new … welcome! We’re always happy to meet new horror fans.
Come for the horror, stay for the community. 🖤
We have a Facebook page for general chats and announcements: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61586812557845
Canberra Horror Movie Group blog and merch is available at: canberrahorrorgroups.au
NOTE: Due to MeetUp not managing spam well we have made the hard decision to turn on membership approval. We would love to have you join us so please do join and we will approve you ASAP. Thanks for your understanding.

Lake Burley Griffin boat cruise
Love Boats, Kingston Foreshore Jetty 5, 8 Trevillian Quay, Kingston ACT 2604, Canberra, AU## 🚤🎃 Halloween on the Lake – Canberra Horror Hangouts Boat Cruise 👻🖤
As part of the Canberra Horror Groups October Halloween celebrations, we’re taking Canberra Horror Hangouts onto the water!
Join us for a relaxed two-hour cruise on Lake Burley Griffin aboard a self-drive boat hired from Love Boats Canberra. We’ll have food, drinks, spooky conversation, great company and, for those who want to, the chance to take a turn piloting the boat.
Brett and Craig will handle most of the driving, so you’re also very welcome to simply sit back and enjoy the cruise.
### 🎟️ IMPORTANT – Purchase Your Ticket Before RSVPing
Places are limited to 10 people (including hosts).
Tickets are $30 per person, which covers the boat hire and Square store fees.
Please purchase your ticket before RSVPing to this Meetup event on our merch store:
https://canberrahorrorgroups.square.site/product/october-lake-burley-griffin-boat-cruise/Q5G6RCUC2PWLUUG7NQVDOJGABecause we have already paid for the boat hire in full, refunds cannot be expected for cancellations made within five days of the event.
If all eight tickets have been sold, please join the Meetup waitlist. If a place becomes available, we’ll contact people on the waitlist directly.
### 🧺 Potluck on the Lake
We’re making this a bit of a floating picnic!
Please bring something to share with the group and leave a comment on the event letting everyone know what you plan to bring. Hopefully this will prevent us discovering that eight horror fans have all brought exactly the same packet of chips.
Food can be as simple or elaborate as you like, but remember—we’re on a boat with limited space, so a full sacrificial feast may be difficult to accommodate.
You’re also welcome to BYO drinks, including alcohol. However, anyone drinking alcohol will not be able to take a turn driving the boat.
### 🚤 The Boat
Our boat is self-driven, so anyone who would like a turn at the helm can have a go, subject to the requirements of the boat operator. Brett and Craig will cover most of the driving.
The boat is enclosed, so a bit of rain won’t stop us. If conditions are severe enough that Love Boats determines it is unsafe to operate, we’ll let everyone know as soon as we hear from them.
Please remember that we’ll be out on Lake Burley Griffin for approximately two hours, and it won’t be easy to disembark once we’re underway. Dress for the conditions and bring anything you think you’ll need for the duration of the cruise.
### 🕦 When
Arrival: 11:30 am sharp
Boat cruise (time on water): 12:00 pm – 2:00 pmPlease arrive by 11:30 am so we have plenty of time to get everyone together, load our food and drinks, and complete any required safety briefing before departure.
The boat leaves at 12:00 pm sharp, so latecomers will find themselves stranded on the shore, watching the rest of us disappear across the lake. 👋🚤

Camping at Orroral
Ororral Campground, Orroral Rd Rendezvous Creek, Tharwa, AU## 🏕️👻 Canberra Horror Hangouts – Camping at Orroral Campground 🌲🔥
We’re heading into the woods for a night of camping, campfires, spooky stories and whatever else might be lurking beyond the firelight... 👀
Join Canberra Horror Hangouts for an overnight camping trip at Orroral Campground in Namadgi National Park.
Whether you’re an experienced camper or just looking for an excuse to spend a night around the fire with some fellow horror fans, this will be a relaxed social weekend with plenty of time to eat, explore, chat and enjoy the surroundings.
And once it gets dark... perhaps we’ll find out why going into the woods is rarely a good idea in horror movies. 🌲😈
### 🌲 What Are We Going to Do?
The main plan is to relax and enjoy a night away together, but depending on what everyone feels like doing, activities may include:
- 🔥 Sitting around the campfire pretending we’re not in the opening scene of a horror movie
- 👻 Telling spooky campfire stories and immediately regretting it once we have to walk back to our tents
- 🍡 Toasting marshmallows to varying degrees of perfection, cremation and accidental sacrifice
- 🌌 Stargazing and trying to decide whether that light moving across the sky is a satellite, a plane or something we should be more concerned about
- 🥾 Exploring some of the nearby walking trails — preferably while there’s still daylight
- 🎲 Playing a few games around camp and discovering who becomes terrifyingly competitive
- 🌲 Listening to mysterious noises coming from the darkness and confidently declaring, “It’s probably just a possum”
- 🔦 Pointing torches into the trees whenever somebody asks, “Did anyone else hear that?”
- 🫣 Trying very hard not to be the first person who says, “I’m just going to check it out”
- ☕ Enjoying a quiet morning around camp while comparing notes on everything that definitely did not circle our tents during the night
There’s no pressure to participate in everything — this is primarily a relaxed social camping trip.
### 📅 When
Saturday 12 December 2026 – Sunday 13 December 2026
The hosts will arrive at around 2:00 pm on Saturday and leave at around 10:00 am on Sunday.
You’re welcome to arrive and depart at whatever time best suits you, however please note the check-in/check-out times on the Parks ACT website: https://actparks.bookeasy.com/orroral-campground#/accom/100203.### 📍 Where
Orroral Campground
Namadgi National ParkOrroral Campground is only about one hour’s drive from Canberra CBD, so it’s close enough for an easy overnight escape while still feeling properly away from the city.
If you need a lift, please use the event chat to coordinate with other attendees.
### ⛺ IMPORTANT – Booking Your Campsite
Everyone attending will need to arrange a place on a campsite.
Each campsite is limited to up to four people (we estimate that there is space for four one-person tents or two big tents). You may book a two-person site to yourself, or use the event chat to coordinate campsite sharing and splitting the $25 booking fee. Caravan sites are also available.Campsites can be booked here:
https://actparks.bookeasy.com/orroral-campground#/accom/100203
Please carefully read the information on the website about camping at Orroral. If you are interested in sharing with other campers, you may organise your campsite with other attendees so we can make the best use of the available sites.
### 🎒 What to Bring
This is a BYO camping equipment event, so please bring everything you need for an overnight stay, including your tent, sleeping gear and anything else that will keep you comfortable.
If you don’t own a tent, don’t let that automatically rule you out. Ask in the event chat — someone may have a spare tent you can borrow.
### 🍔 Food, Drinks & Water
Please bring your own food and drinks for the weekend.
There are free gas BBQs available at the campground, and each campsite also has a fire pit with a metal cooking plate that can be used with a pot or pan.
Please BYO firewood, as collecting wood within the park is prohibited.
Alcohol is permitted, so you’re welcome to bring something to enjoy responsibly around the campsite.
⚠️ There is no drinking water available at the campground.
Please bring plenty of drinking water for the entire stay. December can be hot, and it’s important to have more water than you think you’ll need.
### ⚠️ Things to Be Aware Of
📵 There is no mobile phone coverage at Orroral Campground.
🐾 Unfortunately, pets are not permitted due to the conservation requirements of Namadgi National Park.
Just remember one of the most important rules of horror:
If you hear something strange coming from the woods at night... maybe don’t go investigate it alone. 🌲👀🔥8 attendees
