Except that right now, he doesnât know that. He canât even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.
All he knows is that heâs been asleep for a very, very long time. And heâs just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.
His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, itâs up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mysteryâand conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.
And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, heâs got to do it all alone.
Or does he?

- November: In the Time of Butterflies, by Julia Alverez (Historical Fiction)UVA wine bar, Colorado Springs, CO
Join us in November as we discuss In the Time of Butterflies, a novel by Julia Alverez. Here's a brief description:
It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Rafael LeĂłnidas Trujilloâs dictatorship. It doesnât have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposasâthe Butterflies.
In this extraordinary novel, the voices of all four sisters--Minerva, Patria, MarĂa Teresa, and the survivor, DedĂ©--speak across the decades to tell their own stories, from secret crushes to gunrunning, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujilloâs rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarezâs imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human costs of political oppression.
