City Walk Historic Lunch Counter, 7.0 miles
1500 Hermann Dr, Houston, TX, USToday's walk takes us along the route followed by TSU students in 1960 as they with care, planning, and patience converged on the Weingarten's grocery and lunch counter to protest the city's Jim Crow laws segregating dining facilities of the time and bring Houston into the 20th century. Within six months of their actions, the city's segregated lunch counters were a thing of the past. While the building is gone now, the results of their efforts remain and if you can't get service it is probably because somebody did not come to work sick with COVID.
Our walk will begin at the McGovern Centennial Gardens, follow the bayou to the Columbia Tap rail trail to TSU, then over to Almeda road and around the neighborhood.
After the walk we will have a cool down at Axelrad. Come on out and enjoy the weather with new friends and old.
Wear light colored, loose fitting clothing, comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. For more information about hiking check out this very useful hiking website: https://www.hatsandmore.org/
Our organizers are not guides nor do we have any special training. We are here to come up with hiking ideas and get the hike started. Take the same precautions you would if hiking alone, including the fitness needed to make long hikes. Then enjoy the hike among friends.

City Walk Milby HS 100th Anniversary, 7.0 miles
8201 N Bayou Dr, Houston, TX, USOnce again we are starting at Glenbrook Park for a look at Houston's Milby High School, celebrating its 100th Anniversary. Milby opened in March 1926, replacing Harrisburg High School, with just 13 teachers and 212 students.
Named after Charles Henry Milby (1852–1925) who was a prominent 19th-century Texas entrepreneur, Harris County commissioner, and philanthropist who played a key role in developing the Houston Ship Channel.
The original building had a Romanesque architectural style, many parts of which are still preserved today. Milby is not just a school—it’s a living piece of Houston history that keeps evolving.
A hundred years strong—today we hike through history. The weather is warming up, loose light-colored clothing is recommended for this hike with lots of grass and sun.Wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water. The heat in Texas is always a concern so let someone know if you are having a hard time. For more information about hiking check out this very useful hiking website: https://www.hatsandmore.org/
