Boris Godunov
Chapel Hill Public Library, 100 Library Drive, Chapel Hill, NC, USJoin us on July 12th as we read Boris Godunov. Pushkin's play takes on the life of Boris Godunov, a Tsar of Russia who ruled from 1598 to 1605 during the turbulent Time of Troubles. It examines questions of power, legitimacy, guilt, and the role of the people in shaping history. Its portrayal of political unrest and contested authority alarmed the imperial censors, resulting in its initial ban on publication and performance. Overall, Pushkin blends historical events with psychological insight, creating a powerful meditation on ambition, conscience, and the fragile foundations of political power.
Everyone likes the Falen translation that you can find here or here.
IApart from that, in August, we are also looking forward to Mark Hopper helping us understand The Blizzard by Vladimir Sorokin, a work published in 2010. Mark will likely introduce it with a Pushkin story of the same name. That will be pretty cool, too.
