About us

Coffee and Conversations is an intellectual discussion group. We discuss a variety of topics that are cultural, philosophical, metaphysical, and theological in nature.

One aim we have is to provide a space for deeper discussions with each other, on topics we may not normally get to have on a regular basis, and to offer opportunities to enjoy conversation and build new friendships.

Another aim we have is to engage with topics in order to better understand the truth about them and about reality. This second aim I would argue makes our discussion group different from others. I (Israel) hope our members will use this time to consider the truth about the topics we consider together. Now this second aim is clearly shaped by a Christian worldview. As a Christian, I believe truth is important and ought to be sought after, and I hope that each of you will seek after it in our time together. Thus, the purpose of coffee and conversations is not to form a group that merely promotes an all-encompassing inclusivism or one that simply affirms everyone’s views on a topic or perspective on reality. Rather, we hope that each person will come to coffee and conversations and learn a new way of viewing a topic, meet new friends, and ultimately seek to discover what might be the truth about a topic and reality. I realize that this may not make this group for everyone, but it seems that it certainly does appeal to many (a vast majority of those who attend very well might not be Christians).

We have only 3 rules: RESPECT, LISTEN, LEARN.

# Welcome to Coffee and Conversations!

MEETUP DISCUSSION: “Why Do We Have Men and Women? Sex, Gender, and Human Purpose”
Saturday, September 12 at 9:30 AM

Few subjects generate more passionate disagreement today than sex and gender. Are the differences between men and women merely biological, or do they have a deeper social, relational, and even spiritual purpose?
At this Meetup, we’ll explore how biology, psychology, culture, philosophy, and theology understand the meaning and function of sex and gender.

Together, we’ll discuss questions like:

  • What is the difference between biological sex and gender?
  • Are masculine and feminine differences natural, socially constructed, or some combination of both?
  • Do men and women have distinct roles—or should roles be determined entirely by individual ability and preference?
  • Can we recognize meaningful differences without promoting stereotypes or inequality?
  • What happens to families, relationships, and society when traditional understandings of gender change?
  • How do different religious and secular worldviews answer the question, “What does it mean to be a man or a woman?”

Whether your views are traditional, progressive, uncertain, or still developing, join us for a respectful and thought-provoking conversation over coffee about one of the most important—and controversial—questions facing our culture.
