Growing in God’s Word

Most of us got our opinion of church from churches. One we grew up in, one we tried for a while, maybe one that hurt somebody we love. Whatever your opinion is, there’s a question underneath it worth one evening a week: what did God say the church is?

That is the question this group takes up. We meet Monday nights at 7:00 for about an hour. We open the Bible and we read what it says. What is the church? Whose idea was it? How does a person become part of it? What is it for? And why would it matter to you?

Here’s how a night works. We sit around a table with open Bibles. We read a passage. We ask questions and we let the text answer them. Hard questions are welcome here. So is “I don’t believe this yet.” Nobody will put you on the spot, and nobody will pretend to have every answer.

You don’t need any church background or any Bible knowledge. If you don’t own a Bible, we will have one for you and a workbook to go with it. It costs nothing. Nobody is going to ask you for money.

The study is called The Church: God’s Called Out People. The name comes from something Peter wrote to the early Christians: God called them out of darkness and into His light (1 Peter 2:9). We want to read that together: who did the calling, what He called people out of and what He called them into.

Study the prophet most quoted in the New Testament as we trace his times, key themes, and how to read his message well.
