Using Interpersonal Effectiveness to Promote and Foster Interdependence
Summary
Interpersonal Effectiveness in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an important component in addressing codependency and other relationship problems that occur due to substance use/addiction and across many mental health disorders. These conditions are often maintained by unstable, imbalanced, or enmeshed relationships. By fostering interdependence rather than dependence, providing patients with specific Interpersonal Effectiveness skills will help clients build relationships while providing a framework to positively impact treatment outcomes.
Learning Objectives
1. Describe the concepts of interdependence & codependency in relationships, while recognizing interpersonal patterns observed in clients contributing to emotion dysregulation &/or relapse risk.
2. Explain the clinical function of DBT interpersonal effectiveness skills in reducing relational instability and supporting recovery-oriented treatment outcomes.
3. Learn specific interpersonal effectiveness skills to be used in settings with patients from different backgrounds/settings while assessing the impact of fostering interdependence on treatment engagement and overall outcomes.
