Site D11 at East Harbor State Park Campground has been booked for this event, Saturday and Sunday only, July 26th and 27th.
The same site was not available for Friday. Since this is one of the better sites in the campground, I opted to choose this for 2 nights only.
Only three tents are permitted on this site. The first three people to sign up will have a spot reserved, and can help share in the costs of the site. Others might consider booking a site close to D11. (You might want to book early since sites fill up fast during the summer months.)
We can talk about whether to book a different site for Friday night only. (Please comment below if you are interested in a Friday arrival.)
Event Description: Let's explore the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday morning and join a group paddle on Monday in Port Clinton.
Here's the plan:
I've signed up for a Sunday hike at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is located about 30 minutes west of the campground. We have an 8 a.m. start with Jeff, a wildlife photographer known among many as "the otter whisperer" for his ability to find and photograph wildlife river otters. Jeff will show us his favorite spots and tips for viewing.
Sign up for the hike
On Monday morning at 10:30 a.m., I signed up for a free kayaking event at Nehls Memorial Nature Preserve. We will join a group on an hour-and-a-half scenic paddle throughout the harbor to look at water quality, habitat, and other wildlife. Kayaks, paddles and PFDs will be provided at no cost if spaces are still available.
(I am told these events fill up quickly.)
If you bring your own kayak, we can find some other places to launch over the weekend.
To sign up for the paddle, please e-mail martyn.drabik-hamshare@dnr.ohio.gov or call him at 740-812-6306. Tell him you're with the Free to Roam group.
The kayak launch is located at 4400 E. Muggy Rd, Port Clinton, so the launch site will be close to the campground. We should plan on packing up our tents before we leave for the paddle. We can head home after the event, or find something to do afterward.
