If you’ve ever been in a book club, you know how chaotic the whole thing can get. People don’t read. Or they read differently. Or you race through the last chapters just to make the meeting. Someone inevitably chooses that 700‑page deep dive into the economic history of a country you didn’t know existed.
Silent Book Clubs take all this pressure away. Just show up, say hi (or not!), order a drink (or not!), and settle in with whatever you actually want to read.
Most gatherings follow a simple rhythm: we meet, chat for a few minutes, take an optional group photo, then ease into about an hour of quiet reading, with optional socializing afterward. However, some events have their own flow or special activities, so be sure to read each event description to know what to expect. :)

Proof Readers Book Club at Proof Social Club
Proof Social Club, 1154 Fort Street Mall #10, Honolulu, HI, USWe’re heading back to downtown, and teaming up with Proof Social Club for another Proof Readers Book Club where Chaplain Lane meets Fort Street Mall.
It's the ultimate low-pressure, good-vibes hangout. Love books? Love a good drink? The mocktails are legit! This is the spot.
We’re skipping the formal silent hour this time—it’s just a mellow evening to read, chat, or do a bit of both. Whatever feels right!
- Book Exchange: Bring a few, take a few. No rules! If your books don't find a new home, try to take them with you—otherwise, I’ll drop the leftovers at the Makiki District Park Little Free Library.
- The Food: Pasta Boys will be serving up serious plates of yum. Check their IG to drool in advance.
- The Proof Readers Deal: If you want to level up, give the bartender $10 and join their mailing list. You’ll snag a drink ticket, a $2 coupon for SkullFace Books, a handmade bookmark, and your choice of bookish stickers. It’s a steal.
We start at 6:00 PM and go until whenever.

HSBC Field Trip: Friends' Books & Music
Friends' Books & Music, 610 Ward Avenue, Honolulu, HI, USThe old Village Books & Music at Ward Centre is the new Friends' Books & Music on Ward, and we are checking it out together!
Staffed by volunteers with Friends of the Library of Hawaii, the new store opened in mid-July and features thousands of (mostly pre-loved) books, CDs, DVDs, vinyl records, games, works of art, comic books, and even 8-track tapes (ask your parents) to raise funds for Hawaii’s 51 public libraries.
You don't want to let 51 public libraries down, do you?
Our hosts will give us a quick tour of the new space and tell us about Friends of the Library of Hawaii. I'm sure there will be an opportunity to sign up, if you feel led! :) But no pressure!
The bookstore is on the ground floor of the building once known as the Galliher Building, right behind the Jack-in-the-Box on the corner of Ward and Kapiolani. A mural depicting a certain former U.S. President from Hawaii is painted on its side.
There's a small parking lot (enter from Waimanu St. please), but you can also find street parking nearby, or park at Ward Villages and walk a couple of blocks.
These other options might be a good idea if you're planning to attend our reading sesh right after at Aloha Bakehouse and Cafe, hosted by Nikki. Then you can just leave your car wherever you parked it, and walk to the cafe, which is half a block down Waimanu St.
Budget smudget! Go crazy!
