About us
Join Matéando to share Argentine yerba mate, chat with new people and reconnect with real conversation in a cosy, alcohol-free setting.
About Matéando
Matéando is a small, hosted gathering built around sharing Argentine yerba mate (pronounced “mah-teh”). It’s an alcohol-free way to spend time with others, slowing down, talking and getting to know people through a simple shared ritual.
During sessions I’ll show you how to prepare and drink yerba mate, explain a bit of the culture behind it and serve it in a few different ways so you can find a style you enjoy.
Who’s hosting?
I’m Dominic, a hospitality professional who’s spent over a decade working in hostels and hotels around the world. It’s that background in hospitality that gave me the idea of bringing the social ritual of yerba mate to people who’ve never experienced it before. I was introduced to mate by my Argentine wife, and I’ve trained as a Yerba Mate Sommelier with the Escuela Argentina de Yerba Mate. I created Matéando because I think a lot of us feel more isolated than we admit, and I wanted a gentle, welcoming space where people can come alone, meet others and feel part of something – while also experiencing the unique ritual and flavour of yerba mate.
Who is it for?
It’s aimed at people who want more than small talk – who enjoy open, honest conversation and are curious about other people’s views. This is especially for people who might come on their own, feel a bit shy or just want a different kind of social night. Couples and friends are also welcome, but the way I host it means no one is left out.
*This event needs a minimum of 2 guests to run. If fewer than 2 people book, I’ll offer you a full refund or move your ticket to a future date – whichever you prefer.
### What is yerba mate?
Yerba mate is a traditional South American drink made from dried leaves, prepared in a gourd and sipped through a metal straw. In Argentina, it’s really about sharing – the mate is passed around as a way to slow down, talk and connect.
### What does “Matéando” mean?
It’s an Argentine Spanish word that roughly means “the act of drinking and sharing mate”. It’s less about the drink itself and more about sharing the moment with other people.
### Does yerba mate contain caffeine?
Yes. Yerba mate is naturally caffeinated – somewhere between tea and coffee – but people experience it differently. Many people find it less jittery than coffee, partly because it’s traditionally drunk slowly over a longer period.
### I’ve never tried yerba mate before. Is that OK?
Absolutely. I’ll explain what yerba mate is, how it’s traditionally enjoyed in Argentina and guide you through it step by step. You don’t need any prior knowledge.
### Do I have to come with someone, or can I come alone?
You’re very welcome to come alone – that’s actually who this event is for. Couples and friends are welcome too. The way I host it means no one is left out.
### Do we all share the same mate? What about hygiene?
Traditionally, mate is shared, but I always check what people are comfortable with. Individual servings can be offered if you prefer, and I ask anyone who feels unwell to skip the event.
