π WINTER HIKES β 8:00 AM Β· Every Saturday π SUMMER HIKES β 7:30 AM Β· Every Saturday π DISTANCE β 5 to 9 miles Β· About 2 hours
We just turned one year old and have built a solid group of people who show up, put in the miles, and enjoy good conversation along the way. That's really what this is β a hike with good people. No experience required, no fitness test, no pressure.
We start together and we finish together. Bring your dog, your partner, a friend, or just yourself. All skill levels welcome.
We're loosely guided toward 45 and up, but anyone with a good attitude and a willingness to move is welcome here.
One thing β we're punctual. The posted parking spot is where we meet. Hikes are announced by Tuesday evening each week, so check the location carefully before you head out. Maps and pins don't always agree.
Most Saturdays, breakfast is scheduled afterward at a local spot β posted separately as its own Meetup. The hike and breakfast are independent of each other. Come to one, come to both, entirely up to you.
Sign up and join us on the next one.

Mt. Trashmore - Wake Forest Landfill
6100 Thornton Road, 6100 Thornton Rd, Raleigh, NC 27616, USA, Raleigh, NC, US- Fall has arrived, and for a change it looks like there is no precipitation in the weekend forecast (now), so this is an opportunity to see the leaves as they change from 452 ft. above sea leave. This is a great hike, please note we are accessing from Thornton Road, not Bedford (which we have used before). This is one of the best greenway hikes around!
- The Greenway Connection: Starting from the parking lot at 6100 Thornton Road, you hop onto a short connector to join the Neuse River Greenway Trail heading north/west.
- The Distance: The distance along the main greenway from Thornton Road to the pedestrian entrances of the park is roughly 2.7 to 3 miles each way.
- The Summit & Park Loops: Once you arrive at "Mount Trashmore"βthe local nickname for Green Hills County Park (formerly the North Wake Landfill District Park)βyou still have to factor in the steep gravel climb up the hill and any extra mileage from the parkβs 1.5- to 2.2-mile paved walking loops. Exploring the park infrastructure and summiting the hill easily brings the total tracker to 10.8 miles by the time you return to your vehicle.
