Come Make New Friends

I was recently talking to someone who was attending their very first meetup event. She reminded me how intimidating coming to something like this could be, and how much courage it took to get through the door.

So, for this event, I encourage people who considers themselves a NEW MEMBER to attend. Existing members are also encouraged to come.

**This might be a particularly beneficial event for a new member to attend, as I will try to personally greet everyone who comes, and also help introduce you into a conversation, if you like. This really helps mitigate any anxious feelings you might have.**

This event will be cross promoted on our Instagram account, which is blowing up. We have a number of members on Instagram that are not part of Meetup, so there should be a good cross section of folks to meet at this event.

This group was created because I believe connecting with other people is what brings purpose and meaning to our lives. This will be a social event, where you can mix and mingle and perhaps try to make a friend before the night is done.

The event starts at 7pm, but please feel free to stop by anytime while the event is going on. There is no such thing as being late.

I suggest thinking about some interests/hobbies/passions you may want to talk about for this event. I have found that a good start to finding friends is to share a hobby or interest or passion.

Ikon Lounge - one of Portland's premiere spaces - is opening early for us - so yes, they will be open at 7pm, no matter what the internet says.

Other things to know: this is a 21+ event due to the venue; I apologize for any inconvenience related to that. And, even though Ikon generally has a cover charge, that is waived for our group if you arrive before 9pm.

Here is my thought of the week: we ALL are having a psychology trick played on us in society today. That psychology slight-of-hand is: something that is valuable is ALWAYS difficult to get, but something that is difficult to get is not always valuable. Very interesting thought, isn't it? How often do each and every one of us chase something that is difficult to get (thinking it is valuable) at the sacrifice of things that are actually valuable? I would suggest that the most valuable thing we can strive to have is connection and community.

In fact, I would go as far as to say I believe that connecting with other people is the only real thing that brings purpose and meaning to our lives. If you would you like to have a good conversation and perhaps make a new friend in a relaxed atmosphere, this event is for you!

Jackie's is excited to host our group this evening. The bar is a wonderful space to meet - it has a space that is open air to the outside, but is also completely covered and walled. So, it is private and protected from the elements. Plus, it has a fire pit to warm us up, just in case it is a cooler night in May.

This will be a social event, where you can mix and mingle with anyone and everyone who attends.

The event starts at 6pm, but please feel free to stop by anytime while the event is going on. There is no such thing as being late.

I try to welcome everyone who attends and introduce you into a conversation - if you like, so if you are feeling a little nervous or anxious about attending a social event, you might find this one a lot easier to engage with.

I always say that you find new friends by sharing an interest, or passion, or hobby. Well, my favorite hobby right now is playing Dungeons and Dragons (D&D). I'm curious how many other people like to play or would like to learn how.

So, if you like to play table top roll playing games (like D&D) or are curious about learning more, this event is for you!

I will bring books and materials for people to use. If you could bring something to write with - a pen or pencil - then that would be helpful.

As of the time of this posting, I have no idea how many people are going to sign up and attend, so if there are any experienced players who would like to come to help with the introduction, I would appreciate the help - just in case this event is more popular than I anticipate.

The event starts at 4pm, but please feel free to stop by anytime while the event is going on. But, please realize if you show up after the start time, you may miss some of the information related to the introduction.
