Café Inquiry (ONLINE) - Marriage and Adoption – Repugnant Transactions?
·OnlineOnlineHow does society decide what can be bought and sold? Nobel Prize-winning economist Alvin Roth has written a book titled “Moral Economics: From Prostitution to Organ Sales, What Controversial Transactions Reveal About How Markets Work”, in which he introduces the concept of “repugnant transactions” – exchanges that consenting adults want to make, but which third parties find objectionable on moral or religious grounds. At our next Café Inquiry Online we’ll examine certain aspects of marriage and adoption through the lens of Roth’s work, including questions about gay marriage, dowry and bride price, taking children from their parents, foster care, and adoption across ethnic groups. A link to some background material is available here. See you there!
Café Inquiry starts with a short introduction of
the day’s topic, followed by casual discussion.
This event is free and open to the public.Donations appreciated, but not expected.
Attendees are able to future propose topics which would align with Michigan Humanist’s purpose: from atheism, agnosticism, humanism, secularism, and freethinking to broader subjects in science and humanities, such as religion, philosophy, social issues, politics, evolution, morality, ethics, and psychology.
