About us
Hello, fellow readers! If you're like me, there's quite a few classic novels you have to confess you've never read (or want to reread). This group is designed so we can tackle the classics together in an informal setting that doesn't expect you to be a literary expert.
Exactly what books are "classics"? Check out this list to see the top 100 works of fiction as determined by an aggregate of 80+ lists. Curious about which books we've already tackled and what we have schedule in the upcoming months? Check here.
Please note: there is a waiting list for the group so members are not automatically approved. Also, because of the waiting list, members who have been inactive for 3 months or more may be removed from the group to allow others on the waiting list to join.

Classic Novels: The Odyssey
Merriam Plaza Library, 6120 Slater Street, Merriam, KS, USWe'll discuss The Odyssey (#31 on our list). It was written in 800 B.C. by Homer, although there's some debate if he really wrote it or even existed. The historical epic poem is what Amazon called "the original collection of tall traveler’s tales," following Odysseus on his journey to get back home. It relays the events of the war between Greece and the city of Troy over nine years. Read more here.

Classic Novels: Lonesome Dove
Merriam Plaza Library, 6120 Slater Street, Merriam, KS, USThis one's a departure for us. In February, each person picked a favorite NOT on our classics list. The group voted on them and the top vote-getter was Lonesome Dove. This epic Western novel by Larry McMurtry was published in 1985 and won the Pulitzer Prize. It was also turned into a TV miniseries.
Wikipedia says, "The novel, set in the waning days of the Old West, centers on the relationships between several retired Texas Rangers and their adventures driving a cattle herd from Texas to Montana."
