What we’re about
The NPS is a registered charity welcoming everyone with an interest in philosophy, especially novices. It aims to promote philosophy education to the local public with meetings in pubs, cafes, and community centres.
There are various group leaders spanning very different approaches but all aim for interaction, sharing, and dialogue in a spirit of mature enquiry rather than debate. For one thing that philosophy tells us is that right answers are hard to find.

Echoes of the Ancients (reading group)
Newcastle upon Tyne, GBThe Art of Living Wisely
Primary Reading: Nicomachean Ethics, Books I & II
What does it mean to live a good life? Join us as we explore Aristotle’s timeless guide to human flourishing. Through the lens of eudaimonia, we’ll examine how virtue, reason, and habit shape a life worth living.
No prior reading is needed to join the conversation—but for those ready to dive deeper, we’ll explore Books I & II of Nicomachean Ethics, uncovering Aristotle’s ideas about character, choice, and moral growth.
Participants will discuss key themes, share perspectives, and reflect on how these ancient insights still speak to our modern lives.
We’ll also take brief detours into other ethical approaches, like Utilitarianism and Deontology, to see how Aristotle’s vision compares and contrasts—giving us a richer understanding of what it truly means to live wisely.
This interactive session is a great opportunity to reflect, share insights, and engage in meaningful dialogue. Each session stands alone, making it easy for newcomers to join at any time. Best of all, it’s completely FREE!
Join us on a journey through the rich tapestry of thought, spanning from ancient Greece and Rome to the dawn of early modern philosophy.
Discover how these foundational ideas shaped the intellectual transformations that continue to influence the modern world.
