Talk 1: ODD for Large-Scale Observability
Speaker: Harikrishnan Prabhakar and SivaGnanam Arumugam (Lead Software Engineer at Freshworks)
Running observability at 6 GB/s is a serious scaling challenge - especially when you’re building it entirely on open source. In this talk, we’ll take you behind the scenes of our ~1,500-node OpenSearch and ~300-node Data Prepper deployment processing roughly 400 TB of observability data every day.
We’ll show how we built a full observability platform using OpenSearch, Data Prepper, and OpenSearch Dashboards, extending the ODD ecosystem to support RUM, synthetics, distributed traces, profiling, and alerting without relying on proprietary observability platforms.
We’ll dive into the architectural patterns that made this possible, including pluggable Data Prepper pipelines, custom OpenSearch Dashboards extensions, and S3-backed remote snapshots for reducing cold-storage costs at scale. Beyond the architecture, we’ll share the practical lessons from operating the platform at this scale - including the bottlenecks, trade-offs, and failures that shaped the design. Attendees will leave with concrete patterns for building and extending large-scale observability platforms with the OpenSearch ecosystem, while avoiding vendor lock-in.

Agentic AI features only work when retrieval is accurate, permission-aware, and fresh—not when an LLM sits beside a vector index. This session shows how hybrid search on OpenSearch forms the foundation for Production AI at Freshworks. We walk through the full RAG lifecycle: event-driven ingestion and indexing on OpenSearch. On retrieval, we cover hybrid search (keyword + semantic + sparse), query rewrite, fusion strategies for precision. We ground these patterns in practical use cases—AI copilots searching native and federated knowledge, email bots answering from KB content, and agent-assist finding similar tickets—showing when hybrid search outperforms semantic-only retrieval and how search becomes the reliable backbone for trustworthy agentic AI.
