We are a community of experienced hikers who enjoy exploring trails that range from moderate to challenging levels. While we welcome hikers of all backgrounds, our group typically gravitates toward more advanced adventures that require a solid foundation of hiking experience, endurance, and preparedness.

To support a wide range of skill levels, our hikes and trips are clearly categorized as Beginner/Easy, Moderate, Hard, or Expert. We offer plenty of variety in our schedule, so even if a moderate or hard trip doesn’t align with your comfort level, there are still opportunities to join us on easier adventures and grow at your own pace. We believe it’s essential for every hiker to take personal responsibility for knowing their own abilities and limitations—and to choose trips accordingly. Safety, preparation, and respect for the trail and fellow hikers are our top priorities.

Please note: For Expert-level hikes or multi-day backpacking trips, our leadership team may reach out directly if we feel the level of difficulty may not be a safe or appropriate fit for someone signed up. These conversations come from a place of care and commitment to ensuring a positive and safe experience for all.

We love nature deeply and believe everyone should have the chance to experience the joy, healing, and adventure it offers. Through our hikes, we’re not just exploring trails—we’re building a strong, inclusive outdoor community where all people are welcomed, supported, and encouraged to connect with the natural world.

** Special Notice: This group is NOT run by certified or professional mountain guides. The group leaders, Merb and Food Lion, do have a combined experience of over 20 years in the woods and on trails but are not held liable for any incidents, accidents or issues while on trail. PLEASE make sure you are able to handle the walk and read the disclaimer on every post **

PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE UPDATED THIS TO BE A FREE EVENT. You must provide your own gear, clothing, entrance fees, etc. We will provide unlimited fires/free camping for everyone. This is a family friendly event and families are welcome! You can come Thursday-Sunday or just a day trip! It is totally flexible.

This Basecamp weekend is unlike anything we've ever hosted—and for a very special reason.

For years, Food Lion and I have dreamed of creating a place where our community could gather, disconnect from the chaos of everyday life, and reconnect with nature and one another. That dream has officially become reality.

Welcome to the very first PS Hikers Basecamp Weekend on the 40 acres that Food Lion and I recently purchased together. ❤️🏕️

You won't just be attending another camping trip—you'll be among the very first people to help us break in this incredible property, explore its beauty, and become part of the beginning of something we hope will serve our hiking family for many years to come. There will be adventure, laughter, campfires, and countless memories made as we write the first chapter of Basecamp's story together.

We couldn't imagine a better group of people to share this milestone with, and we are so excited to welcome you home.

***

Join us for four unforgettable days of hiking, biking, campfires, laughter, and community as we explore some of the most beautiful outdoor destinations in Southwest Virginia and West Virginia.

Whether you're coming for the trails, the friendships, or simply to unplug from everyday life, this weekend is all about slowing down, making memories, and enjoying the outdoors together.

###

August 20th: Arrival Day – 12:00 PM

We'll get everyone settled into camp before heading out for a relaxing afternoon adventure at Hungry Mother State Park. We will be hiking Molly's Knob Trail which is 3.7 miles. This easy to moderate hike is the perfect way to stretch our legs, meet everyone, and kick off an amazing weekend together.

Friday, August 21st: Free day/Work Day/Beach Day

We will have a FREE day here; help us work the land or go venture out throughout Marion, VA or other local destinations. Merb will be hosting a sunrise hike on the AT which is only .7 miles from their community. We can do a quickly 3-4 miles.

In the afternoon after lunch we can head over to the beach lake at Hungry Mother state park as well as kayak/paddle board so bring something to hit the water!

Saturday, August 22nd: New River Gorge National Park

We'll carpool together from Basecamp for an unforgettable day exploring New River Gorge National Park, located approximately 2 hours from Basecamp. We'll spend the day hiking, taking in breathtaking overlooks, and experiencing one of America's newest national parks before returning to camp for another fun evening together.

Sunday, August 23rd: Grayson Highlands State Park

We'll wrap up Basecamp with one of our favorite traditions—a moderate 4-mile loop through the spectacular Grayson Highlands. Along the way we'll keep an eye out for the park's famous wild ponies (our beloved "baby pony friends") while enjoying incredible mountain scenery before saying our goodbyes.
