About us
If you like youtube videos by Gad Saad, Triggernometry, Quillette, Spiked!, The Spectator, or Quadrant, you will love this book club.
As a Book Club, people really need to read the book, or try to read the book (or listen to it) before coming. There have been issues with people not reading the book and riffing. If you have not read the book, please do not come. Consider coming to one of our Socials instead.
For those who come along to the meetings, feel free to join our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1741827566362452

Suicidal Empathy by Gad Saad
Shakespeare Hotel, 200 Devonshire st Surrey Hills, Sydney, AUThursday 28 January 2027: 7:00pm
Our next meeting will be held at our usual venue, upstairs at The Shakespeare Hotel, 200 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, where we will discuss Suicidal Empathy by behavioural scientist and podcaster Gad Sadd.Sadd launches a provocative attack on what he regards as one of the West's most dangerous intellectual fashions: the elevation of empathy above reason, evidence and self-preservation.
What happens when criminals are treated primarily as victims, when illegal behaviour is excused in the name of compassion, when illegal immigrants are seen as victims, and when Western societies are expected to apologise endlessly?
Sadd responds that such a society will feel guilty about asserting its values and will eventually become incapable of defending itself. He argues that empathy without limits rewards antisocial behaviour and undermines social cohesion.
These are controversial arguments, and they should make for an interesting discussion. Members are encouraged to agree AND disagree with Saad, discussing the arguments he makes and the counter-arguments. Reading the book is required.
Hard copies available through the local library system. Anna's Archive has soft copies. Otherwise, a PDF copy is available from Dale on dalemills@cantab.net.
We will discuss the book in a focused way for about 45 mins. Opinions both for and against Saad's arguments are very much encouraged. The aim is not simply to decide whether we agree with the author, but to examine his arguments and consider what his work makes sense.
After the formal discussion concludes, almost everyone stays on to continue talking about the book, or almost anything else!
Many members begin arriving shortly after 6.00 pm, but the meeting begins at 7.00pm.
