Recess For Active Retirees - RFAR

Meet 10 AM at visitor center 175 East Main in Brevard in Transylvania County . Park on street ( free). Can gather maps and info for walking tour of downtown area for 20 animal sculptures and 18 historical buildings. They have maps for self guided walks to see historical buildings and sculptures. This area is know for 20 some waterfalls so a good chance to get some local info about them for future reference. You can do on your own or follow me.Walk sidewalks with some inclines for about 2 hours. Restrooms available at visitor center and in town.If you are a shopper they have many stores including Mast. Can do lunch at El Ranchero Mexican place that was suggested by a local as good ,$ and can handle a group. You are free to find your own lunch spot. Also picnic tables around if you want to bring your own. Also we can look for elusive white squirrels around town and on Brevard College campus. New venue and event so may be some updates. FYI Non -hosted event ..but if you like 60's and 70's music Bold Rock Cider 72 School House road Mills River to have event 6-9 PM Friday Sept 26 2025 with the Show Boat Band . RFAR normally only does events during the week days but this is only happening at night . If someone want to be a host please advise . Live Music! Sept 26/2025 6:00-9:00 pm

They said if weather is good will be outside otherwise they have indoor set up too. Look for RFAR signs if we are there.

Landscaping on steep slopes presents challenges that do not exist on flat land. Depending on the direction of your slope, there are significant differences in soil moisture, composition, and intensity of sunlight which impact the selection, establishment, and management of vegetation.

Learn how to better think about these challenges and get some tips on how to increase your odds of success in landscaping your slope with native plants.

Drew Lathin is the owner of Mountain Native Landscape Design and a certified Blue Ridge Naturalist. He has been playing around with native plants in built landscapes for over 25 years as a native plant nursery manager, designer, installer, and consultant.

Utilizing ecological principles in his work, he is a fierce advocate for the need to re-wild our urban and suburban landscapes using native plants in thoughtful and legible designs to bring biological diversity and beauty to our everyday lives. More than 500 of his clients have rain gardens, prairie gardens, pollinator gardens, natural shorelines, and alternative lawns. Drew is the former President of the Board of the Wildflower Association of Michigan.
