Mount Diablo State Park (Mitchell Canyon), Clayton, CA
This loop hike is approximately 8 miles in length, with 2,300 feet in elevation gain.

We will meet at the Mitchell Canyon Staging Area of Mt Diablo State Park, outside the visitor center. There is a $6 vehicle fee at the Mitchell Canyon Staging Area, payable by cash/check.

The hike will take us to up to Eagle Peak via the Eagle Peak Trail and then back down via Meridian Ridge Rd and Mitchell Canyon Rd. We'll stop for a snack break at the approximate half way point.

Synopsis: Join Steve Bakaley and Cynthia Denny on a relatively leisurely paced saunter in Big Basin. We'll start with a docent-led walk around the Redwood Trail to see what's become of some of the largest trees in the park. From the Redwood Trail we'll make a counter clockwise loop consisting of the Skyline-to-the Sea Trail, the Creeping Forest Trail, and the Dool Trail.

Distance: The Redwood Trail is 0.6 miles and the Creeping Forest Loop is 3 miles. Lunch will be in a shady spot on Creeping Forest.

Elevation Gain: Approximately 500 feet

Meet: 10:30am at the Redwood Trail Head. The docent-led walk will start at approximately 11am

Important Info: You must get a day use reservation with the park HERE before you register for this hike. The latest Park Information can be found HERE. If all reservations are taken and you elect to use the shuttle, note that it doesn't start running until 11:00 and you will likely miss the docent-led portion. If you take the shuttle and miss us, you have the options of either trying to intersect us on the Redwood Loop or waiting at the Redwood Trail Head until we finish. We'll do a quick check for late-comers at the Redwood Trail Head and then go to the junction with the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail to start the second portion of the hike

Level: Moderate(1A)

Cost: $2 Parking reservation fee and $6 day use feea very limited first come first served parking spaces may be available for $10 on a non reservation basis

Bring: Lunch, liquids, weather-appropriate clothing. No potable water is available in the park except prefilled aluminum bottles of water for sale at the entrance kiosk for $3

Signup Restrictions: You must successfully reserve a parking space with the park before signing up for this hike or you must carpool with someone who has a parking reservation.

Directions: Taken Ca 9 south to downtown Boulder Creek and go right on Ca 236 to the park headquarters kiosk past the shuttle bus parking lot.
Carpool: Please arrange your own carpools where it is convenient for you.
Note: Carpool transportation is at the sole risk of the participants.

Sat, Jun 14, 2025, 10:30 AM PDTMt Tam Loop Hike: Cataract, High Marsh, and Kent Trails
Rock Springs Parking Area Mt Tamalpais State Park, Mill Valley, CA
Join Sahna and co-leader Bob Solotar on Mt. Tam. This loop hike highlights a fine selection of Mt Tam's beauty, passing through wooded creeks, grasslands, chaparral, and meadows. We will take two short detours: to a waterfall earlier in the hike and to Potrero Meadows near the end.

We will gather at the Rock Springs Trailhead, located on West Ridgecrest Blvd approx. 1.5 miles from the Pantoll Ranger Station. We will hike along Cataract Creek on the Cataract Trail, check out the waterfall near the junction of Cataract and High Marsh Trails, then take the High Marsh Trail, initially passing Bare Knoll. Our route will continue south on the Kent Trail, detour to Potrero Meadows, then return via the Benstein Trail. Some modifications may apply depending on trail conditions.

Approx. 6.5 miles and approx. 1,100 ft elevation change.

We will go at a moderate pace, keeping an eye out for what wildflowers are still blooming and listening for birdsong. There will be some uneven stretches of trail (rocky sections, roots, etc.), and grasses may be overgrown on the more remote trails.

Restrooms are located at the trailhead and at Laurel Dell Picnic Area (portable toilets, pit toilets).

Level: Moderate

Bring: 2L of water, layers for varying weather conditions, sturdy hiking boots or shoes, hat and/or sunscreen, snacks/lunch, hiking poles (optional).

The walking tour will be lead by Coastal Erosion and climate change experts, Westside residents, and advocates Chase Davenport and Brian Reyes of Friends of Sunset Dunes and Sierra Club SF Group.
