About us
A book club for people who don’t just want to read strange worlds—they want to make them.
We read speculative fiction across fantasy, science fiction, horror, magical realism, dystopian fiction, and everything in between, using the books we read to talk about how stories actually work: worldbuilding, character, structure, voice, pacing, tropes, romance, magic systems, genre conventions, and the choices writers make on the page.
But we’re also a writing group.
Members can share work, give and receive thoughtful feedback, workshop ideas and troublesome chapters, and connect with peer writing buddies for encouragement and accountability between meetings.
You don’t need to be published. You don’t need an MFA. You don’t even need to have a finished draft. You just need to love speculative fiction and be interested in becoming a better reader, writer, or both.
Come read. Come write. Come make something strange.
📋ATTENTION: Meetup groups are expensive, therefore this club’s official home will live on Partiful. Please, follow the group there. I will only keep the club up here for a limited time.

Workshop: Save the Cat! Writes a Novel
Cosmic Saltillo, 1300 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78702, USA, Austin, TX, USFor this month’s workshop, we’re reading Jessica Brody’s Save the Cat! Writes a Novel and putting its story-structure method to work. Read the book beforehand, then bring a story you’re writing—or an idea you’d like to develop. Together, we’ll work through the fifteen beats and begin building our own beat sheets.
Come with a project at any stage, from a brand-new idea to a messy work in progress. No pages to submit and no critique—just a chance to study craft, talk through ideas, and leave with a clearer map for your story.

Book Club: Perdido Street Station
Cosmic Saltillo, 1300 E 4th St, Austin, TX 78702, USA, Austin, TX, USIn the sprawling city of New Crobuzon, humans live alongside strange species, grotesque technologies, arcane sciences, and creatures that defy easy classification. When scientist Isaac Dan der Grimnebulin accepts an unusual commission from a winged stranger desperate to fly again, his experiments unleash something far more dangerous than either of them imagined.
China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station is a landmark of the New Weird, blending fantasy, science fiction, horror, steampunk, and political fiction into a world that feels simultaneously fantastical and grimily alive. Its dense cityscape offers plenty to examine in worldbuilding, atmosphere, invented cultures, genre-blending, description, and the relationship between setting and story.
Read the novel beforehand and come ready to discuss it both as readers and as writers—how Miéville makes an enormous and unfamiliar world feel inhabited, introduces strange concepts without over-explaining them, uses the city itself as a narrative force, and balances imaginative excess with character, conflict, and plot.
