Please join us on Wed, August 12 for a creative journey with Barbara Maker.

Barbara is an experienced artist having been both a former art teacher and interior designer. Fortunately for us she is also an organizer in The Art of Photography. She will be presenting a variety of image genres that display her artistic passion, while you enjoy her varied collection of compelling work. The goal with Barbara's presentation is for you to get ideas you can apply to your own photography and craft.

Barbara says, "I am a firm believer that eyes are a photographer’s most valuable tool. I try to shoot just as I want my final shot to be with as little cropping as possible. I also never use a tripod but love post processing using Photoshop Elements, Nik collection, Smart Photo Editor and Topaz Studio. My other photography props are black and white plexiglass and a light board.

Additionally, I have a fascination with floral and plant subjects, but my love for abstract cannot be denied. I am very interested in street photography, but have been too timid to venture more deeply into that genre so far. I am so glad to be a part of this marvelously talented group of photographers - there is so much more to learn."

I'll be back in Florida soon, and what better way to celebrate than a sunrise photoshoot of one of my favorite subjects using one of my favorite techniques?

Join me for a sunrise long exposure workshop at the Commercial pier, and we'll work on long exposure seascapes with a static element (the pier).

If this is already in your toolbox, it's a great opportunity to practice, and if you haven't tried long exposure photography I can show you how. You can take long exposures with any camera that gives you manual control over aperture and shutter speed, with an iPhone's build in "live" mode or with a variety of phone camera apps,

I've used "Spectre" on the iPhone but there are a number of them out there. for both iPhone and android / google phones. Search for "Long Exposure" in whichever App Store you use. (there's a "Slow Shutter Cam" app on both platforms and I hear good things about "ReeXpose" and "Even Longer" on IOS. (Some of those apps are subscription based or cost money, but you can find some that have trial versions, so you can test them first.)

Enthusiasts might want some specialized hardware:
• a Tripod,
• a neutral density filter or polarizing filter
• a remote trigger or other remote controls
(many manufactures have an app for
controlling the camera from a smartphone.)
* Sunscreen if you're staying past sunrise.

You'll also have the opportunity to do some street photography on the beach and in the surrounding area of shops and restaurants, and there are very likely to be seabirds - I frequently see gulls, pelicans, osprey, and sandpipers here.

Photo Challenge Album
A photo challenge album will be created for the event.
Upload three of your best images to the photo album attached to this event by 7: PM Thursday, Oct 1 2026. The winning image will be the permanent album cover. There will be second and third places as well.

You're cordially invited to join our group on a "hands-on" opportunity to create great photo images in this interesting and diverse area of Miami. Calle Ocho -in Little Havana, is a fantastic location for "Street Photography" with very unusual and challenging photo opportunities.

Come ready to "create magic moments" with... strong wall murals backgrounds, interesting characters, art galleries, cigar rolling, dancers / musicians, and unusual local scenery. If you so desire, you can stay after our photoshoot to enjoy a typical, inexpensive, and great meal from the many restaurants in the area.

The workshop leader / instructor (Rafael) taught photography classes and has personally over 150 field photoshoots and will be available all along this shoot for specific tips, technical consultation, and photography considerations to create better images making this a memorable learning experience AND provide insightful cultural / historic tidbits of information about the area - This workshop is a “One-of-a-Kind” technically supported photoshoot with attention to practical learning (and some local history) for which there is a $10 fee.
