The Millennial Social Club

This is a new event for people interested in reading science fiction & fantasy (SF&F) stories with something to say about life, the universe, and everything. You can be a complete newcomer to the genre, or an oldschool fan of Asimov and Le Guin.

To start things off, I'm bringing a Terry Pratchett short story called "Troll Bridge." It takes about 15-20 minutes to read, then we can chat about it. Afterward we'll just hang out talking about SF&F narratives we like (in any form of media). You don't need to bring anything of your own, but you're welcome to bring a short story to share too, if you want.

Long-Term

If this goes well, we might read other authors ranging from the satirical (such as Pratchett) to heavier topics (R.F. Kuang, Ted Chiang, N.K. Jemisin). The goal is a small, casual group to meet people, with stories as a conversation starter. We might get into longer novels later, but for now, short stories read during the meetups will let people dive in and join the discussion without having to catch up.

Time & Place

1pm Saturday at the Lincoln Square South Tower food court's sofa area (in the back, where social-deduction events often meet). Parking is free on weekends.

Rock Paper Scissors Tournament in Gas Works Park!

Come to Gas Works Park on Saturday, September 12th for the greatest Rock Paper Scissors tournament / social event / keychain collection simulator that has ever happened in the history of the sport!

We will be located under the covered area near the restrooms and the firepits!

What to expect:

• Unique team based Rock Paper Scissors event designed around making new friends on your path to victory!

• All Ages! Everyone is welcome! Anyone can win!

• Completely free! (Tbh I've spent a decent amount on this but it's worth it to make something special for the local community!)

• Collect keychains to symbolize your victories! Or wager them in underground matches like you are in some kind of dueling anime...

• Live shoutcasters and referees will bring "professional commentary" and fair play to make this a great show for spectators!

• Games, live commentary, and keychain collecting will take place starting at 2pm, but the official tournament bracket will close and the tournament will start at 4:30pm sharp. Be sure to show up before then to get a team name and number if you want to play in the bracket for the BIG trophy!

• We are committed to providing a safe and inclusive environment for players of all backgrounds and identities. Harassment, discrimination, or disruptive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated.

What to bring:

• Bring your own snacks and drinks to share! We have ample picnic tables around. We will supply like a pack or 2 of Costco bottled water.

• Bring yourself and a willingness to meet some cool new people! You can bring a team of friends, but we highly encourage welcoming solos and other teams as we will be gradually increasing the minimum team size throughout the day.
