Brunch & Book Discussion: Train Dreams by Denis Johnson
James Provisions, 290 Grapevine Hwy, Hurst, TX 76054, Hurst, TX, USBonus August meeting!
Recently a friend recommended watching Train Dreams on Netflix which I enjoyed especially given the multiple thought provoking themes presented by the film. I was pleasantly surprised to learn a short book under the same title, Train Dreams by Denis Johnson, was the inspiration so I wanted to change things up a bit and have a discussion around the film and/or book :)
Summary from Goodreads:
"Suffused with the history and landscapes of the American West—its otherworldly flora and fauna, its rugged loggers and bridge builders—this extraordinary novella poignantly captures the disappearance of a distinctly American way of life.
Train Dreams tells the story of Robert Grainer, a day laborer in the American West at the start of the twentieth century—an ordinary man in extraordinary times. Buffeted by the loss of his family, Grainer struggles to make sense of this strange new world. As his story unfolds, we witness both his shocking personal defeats and the radical changes that transform America in his lifetime."
We will meet for brunch at James Provisions in Hurst.

Brunch & Book Discussion: The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Ida Claire, 5001 Beltline Road, Dallas, TX 75254, Dallas, TX, USOur next book will be The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath.
Goodreads summary:
"The Bell Jar chronicles the crack-up of Esther Greenwood: brilliant, beautiful, enormously talented, and successful, but slowly going under -- maybe for the last time. Sylvia Plath masterfully draws the reader into Esther's breakdown with such intensity that Esther's insanity becomes completely real and even rational, as probable and accessible an experience as going to the movies. Such deep penetration into the dark and harrowing corners of the psyche is an extraordinary accomplishment and has made The Bell Jar a haunting American classic."
We'll meet for brunch at Ida Claire in Addison.

Brunch & Book Discussion: The Secret Life of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar
La Parisienne French Bistro - Addison, 5100 Beltline Road Suite 700, Dallas, TX, USJoin us for brunch to discuss The Secret Life of Sunflowers by Marta Molnar.
Goodreads summary:
"A gripping, inspiring novel based on the true story of Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law.
When Hollywood auctioneer Emsley Wilson finds her famous grandmother's diary while cleaning out her New York brownstone, the pages are full of surprises. The first surprise is, the diary isn't her grandmother's. It belongs to Johanna Bonger, Vincent van Gogh's sister-in-law.
Johanna inherited Vincent van Gogh's paintings. They were all she had, and they weren't worth anything. She was a 28 year old widow with a baby in the 1800s, without any means of supporting herself, living in Paris where she barely spoke the language. Yet she managed to introduce Vincent's legacy to the world.
The inspiration couldn't come at a better time for Emsley. With her business failing, an unexpected love turning up in her life, and family secrets unraveling, can she find answers in the past?"
We'll meet at La Parisienne French Bistro in Addison.
