Let's celebrate National Singles Day
National Singles Day is actually a thing and that gives us a reason to celebrate. (You can see the history of it below.) Bring your single friends and relatives to join us for a party that will feature food, fun and fellowship. We'll have ice-breakers, speed-friending, silly games, karaoke, and food.
The cost is $5 online at the Valley Church Website (or use the QR code in the photo) or $7 at the door. More details to come in the next couple of weeks.
A little history: The U.S. version of National Singles Day began in the 1980s when the Buckeye Singles Council in Columbus, Ohio, created a celebration to honor and recognize the benefits and freedoms of living a single life. At the time, many cultures still viewed singleness as a problem or even a curse, especially for women, and terms like “old maid” or “spinster” carried negative connotations. The council wanted to shift the narrative toward celebrating independence, self-sufficiency, and the unique opportunities that come with being single
In 2017, the organizers decided to align the holiday with National Singles Week, which is held during the third full week of September each year. This change brought the celebration to the Saturday of Singles Week, a date that continues today.
Purpose and Meaning:
National Singles Day is intended to:
- Celebrate the achievements, independence, and contributions of single people.
- Challenge stereotypes about single life, showing that singles are active, engaged, and capable of fulfilling personal and community roles.
- Promote inclusivity by recognizing that being single is a valid and positive choice, not a deficit National Day Calendar.
In summary: National Singles Day in the U.S. began as a grassroots effort in Columbus, Ohio, in the 1980s to counter stigma around being single, and today it is a widely recognized celebration of independence, self-worth, and community contribution.
