What we’re about
If you're a woman who lives in the Waynesboro, VA area or nearby and would enjoy playing modern board games with other women, join us!
We meet regularly on Sunday evenings and occasionally on other nights, sometimes at Panera or elsewhere and sometimes at our house. At each meeting, we'll offer a game or games from one of the categories below. If you've never played the game, no worries -- we like teaching! We also believe more in enjoying the game than in winning.
GAME DIFFICULTY LEVELS
How hard a game will be to learn seems to be most people's first concern when deciding whether to come to a game night, so we'll try to make that explicit for each meeting by using the ratings below, which reflect the complexity of the rules, how much the game relies on luck vs. strategy, and how long it typically takes to play with 3-4 players.
We're using a slightly modified version of Board Game Geek's (BGG) weight rating scale rather than relying on our own perceptions of the games, and that way you can more easily compare the games in our BGG collection.
- Party: Includes most party and family games that can be picked up easily. Mostly luck based. Often scale up to groups of 6-10 and typically pretty short, like 10-15 minutes.
- Easyish (BGG 1.0-1.9): Games that may need a few minutes of explanation but are pretty easy to pick up and learn while playing. More luck than strategy. Four player games typically 1-2 hours.
- Medium (BGG 2.0-2.25): Games with dynamics and options that might require a bit more strategy and analysis, although luck still plays a role. The gameplay might be pretty simple, but figuring out how maximize your points might take time. Four player games typically 1-3 hours.
- Medium Heavy (BGG 2.26-2.8): These games tend to have quite a few options that require strategy and analysis, but they can be a lot of fun to sink your teeth into! Best suited to players who are already familiar with modern board games. Four player games typically around 3-4 hours.
We also have a few heavier games (BGG 2.9-3.8), like Ark Nova and Feast for Odin, which we'd love to play with anyone interested!
TYPES OF GAMES
We are most drawn to games that are cute or charming, with pretty graphics and light-hearted themes. We particularly enjoy cooperative games, where players work together against some aspect of the game as the opponent. We also prefer Euro-style games, where the goal is to win by having the most points, as opposed to American-style games, where the goal is defeat (and eliminate) the other players. But we have both kinds among our collection.
CAMPAIGN GAMES
These are games meant to be played in "chapters," with players returning to future meetings to pick up where they left off and play the next chapter. The ones we have are easy to medium in difficulty (and are very cute), but they do require more commitment.
We'd love to get a group of 4 committed to going through one of our charming campaign games, like Stuffed Fables, Forgotten Waters, or Wonder Book, meeting maybe 3-4 times a month until finished. If you're interested, let Amy know.
PLEASE RSVP
FYI: If no one signs up for an event by an hour or so before it starts, we may decide to stay home, so we don't recommend showing up unless you've RSVP'd in advance!

Easyish Game: Quacks of Quedlinburg
Location not specified yetFrom the BGG description page: "In Quacks, which was first released as The Quacks of Quedlinburg, players are charlatans — or quack doctors — each making their own secret brew by adding ingredients one at a time. Take care with what you add, though, for a pinch too much of this or that will spoil the whole mixture!
Each player has their own bag of ingredient chips. During each round, they simultaneously draw chips from their bags and add them to their pots. The higher the face value of the drawn chip, the further it is placed in the pot's swirling pattern, increasing how much the potion will be worth. Push your luck as far as you can, but if you add too many cherry bombs, your pot will explode!
At the end of each round, players gain victory points and coins to spend on new ingredients, depending on how well they managed to fill up their pots. But players whose pots have exploded must choose points or coins — not both! The player with the most victory points at the end of nine rounds wins the game."

Easyish Game: Red Dragon Inn
Location not specified yetFrom the BGG description page: "In Red Dragon Inn, you and your friends are a party of heroic, fantasy adventurers. You've raided the dungeon, killed the monsters, and taken their treasure. Now you're back, and what better way to celebrate your most recent victory than to spend an evening at the Red Dragon Inn. You and your adventuring companions will spend the night drinking, gambling, and roughhousing. The last person who is both sober enough to remain conscious and shrewd enough to hold onto his Gold Coins wins the game.."
