What we’re about

"Human understanding is marvellously enlightened by daily conversation with [other people], for we are, otherwise, compressed and heaped up in ourselves, and have our sight limited to the length of our own noses." - Michel de Montaigne

Finding a place to have discussions about intellectually oriented topics can be difficult these days. So this group is for exactly that!

Discussions will be based on ideas, and sources for these will come from articles, books, podcasts, videos, and films. Topics will be eclectic and wide-ranging: ideally a mix of the sciences, the humanities, the arts, and current events. Though topics can be about serious stuff, we do have fun discussing them!

The atmosphere: There will always be a moderator who makes sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to talk, and no one dominates or monopolizes the discussion.  A priority of the group is a rational (reason-based) approach (scientific and/or critical thinking).  Our members are people who have considered opinions but aren't dogmatic about them, people who are open-minded and able to talk about opinions that differ from their own in a collaborative way.

Meetings of the group will always take place on the weekend, and always in a public location like a cafe, pub, or restaurant.

New members are always welcome! If you’re interested, please be sure there's a realistic photo of yourself. And please answer these questions, which will appear when you click on the ‘request to join’ button:

  1. Please list two or three non-fiction books or articles that you’ve found interesting recently.
  2. Where do you get your news?
  3. How do you feel about science?
  4. What subjects do you like to talk about?
