For our July meeting, we are beginning our Q3 Japan quarter. **Book:** Osamu Dazai, *The Setting Sun* **Translator:** Juliet Winters Carpenter, Tuttle **Literary region:** Asia **Country:** Japan **Period:** 1900–1950 **Date:** Sunday, July 26, 2026 **Time:** 2:00–4:00 PM **Location:** Dineen Outpost - 1042 Gerrard St E, Toronto, ON M4M 1Z5 *The Setting Sun* was first published in 1947 and is one of Osamu Dazai's major works. Set in postwar Japan, the novel follows an aristocratic family as inherited class structures collapse and older social codes lose their authority. **Discussion focus** * Postwar Japan * Class decline * Family collapse * Gender and social expectation * Moral exhaustion * Self-destruction and survival * What changes when an old social order disappears You do not need an academic background.
