Will Progress Set Us Free

For this session we'll read John Maynard Keynes's 1930 essay "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren" alongside Scott Alexander's 2014 essay "Meditations on Moloch." Writing in the depths of the Great Depression, Keynes asks his readers to look a century ahead and imagine a world transformed by technological progress and capital accumulation. Eventually, he predicts, humanity may finally solve its "economic problem": satisfying our material needs will cease to occupy most of our lives, leaving us with the unfamiliar problem of deciding what to do with our newfound freedom. Alexander offers a darker possibility. "Moloch" is his name for the competitive dynamics that can leave individuals, firms, and societies pursuing outcomes none of them actually want. A company that sacrifices profit for humane values may lose to one that doesn't; a nation that refuses an arms race may be dominated by one that participates. Read together, the essays ask whether technological progress can ever deliver the liberation Keynes imagined. If we become vastly richer, do we eventually get to stop optimizing and decide what our prosperity is for—or will competition simply absorb our newfound abundance and force us to keep running? 2nd Saturday "Not quite a book club" in the Richmond District

Show up having read a book\* you want to talk about. Get a beverage and/or food inside the cafe. We will probably meet outside in Bazaar Cafe's back garden.\*\* (The garden is accessible through an alley. There is a door to the alley next to the register inside. You can also go directly to the back garden from the street via the alley entrance on the right side of the right Cafe window.) Once you've spotted the group, we will introduce ourselves and have a brief period of chit chat. Then we will go around our group each talking about the (different!) books we read. Afterwards, you are welcome to stick around and chat. If you have a physical book you are done reading and want to offer other folks in the group, you are welcome to do that, but there is absolutely no obligation to do so. \*Any book! Could be a graphic novel, or non-fiction, or fiction, or a mystery or a romance novel or SciFi or Fantasy! \*\*If it is raining or a really bad air day from wildfires, it may be too crowded inside Bazaar Cafe to find a table, although it was raining during a few meetings early last year and the Bazaar cafe folks helped me stake out a table. In the event of rain and no space inside, I will probably move the event a few blocks away to Ilana Coffee or Royal Ground Coffee on Clement. I will message the group if we meet inside or if the location moves to another coffee shop.

After such a serious book in August, let's go for a lighthearted and fun read in September - we'll discuss "The Mostly True Story of Tanner & Louise" by Colleen Oakley. There are several copies available at the library as well as the audiobook so it should be easy to get! The location is TBD but will be in the Burlingame/San Mateo/Foster City area.
