“Very, very few films, no matter how great or important, are actually urgent. You’ll get around to it eventually; it’ll be stuck in time waiting for you. But NAZA is urgent, an essential film, a living document in conversation with the most pressing issue in the world right now.” The Film Stage. We will meet at the Nova bar from 6 pm onwards. Please book your tickets early, Stefan – 0437 777522.

A Cinema of Silence: Discussing April

A Cinema of Silence: Discussing April

Sat, Oct 10, 3:00 AM
From Film as Art: a Cinematic Discussion Group
5.0

Join us for a discussion of Dea Kulumbegashvili’s April (2024), a stark and unsettling film that moves between intimate human drama, social reality, and something more mysterious and abstract. Rather than simply reviewing the film, we’ll explore its visual language, pacing, use of silence, sexuality, motherhood, and the tension between the everyday and the uncanny. We’ll also discuss what Kulumbegashvili’s austere style makes possible—and what it asks from the viewer. No preparation or specialist knowledge required. Come with your interpretations, questions, disagreements, and uncertainties. The discussion is the point.

50+ Filmmakers/Actors Gather Every Wednesday - Join Us!

50+ Filmmakers/Actors Gather Every Wednesday - Join Us!

Wed, Oct 14, 6:00 AM
From Movie Mutuals
4.6

Join us every **Wednesday at 5 PM** at the Emporium food court (located behind Grill’d Burger Restaurant in the CBD, not near Melbourne Station) for a dynamic networking event tailored for filmmakers, actors, and film enthusiasts. Afterward, we continue the evening with Happy Hour drinks at a nearby bar and a chance to grab dinner together. Understanding that schedules vary, feel free to join at any time that suits you. Rain or shine, our community has gathered every week for the past year, maintaining a consistent and welcoming environment. Our group has grown remarkably, with a **weekly turnout of over 50 participants**, blending newcomers with regulars to create a vibrant, diverse community. Feel free to bring friends interested in filmmaking; it’s a great way to introduce new faces to our expanding network. Whether you’re a writer, actor, animator, or independent filmmaker, come share your experiences, discuss current projects, or chat about favorite films. This event fosters connections among like-minded individuals, encourages friendships, and opens doors for collaboration. At **7 PM**, we move to 'Champagne Problems', a five-minute walk away, where we continue networking in a more formal setting over drinks and food. This change of venue offers an ideal environment to keep conversations flowing. **RSVP** to help us gauge attendance and become part of a growing network of film professionals and enthusiasts. Though the event begins in the afternoon, the relationships you build here can last well into the night and beyond. **What to Expect:** *Our Wednesday meetup is primarily a large networking event for industry professionals. There’s no set theme, workshop, or speaker. It’s a relaxed gathering where filmmakers, actors, and creatives can connect, discuss projects, share needs, and learn from each other. Conversations flow freely around the table, fostering an environment of growth and camaraderie. Beyond Wednesdays, we also host exclusive events such as table reads, cinematography workshops with Panasonic, member screenings, and more. Each week brings fresh dialogues—some participants discuss their weekend shoots, others exchange insights with seasoned producers and directors, and a few engage in filmmaking exercises. It’s a space designed for creative engagement without strict structure or formal oversight.* \*Note: Our community emphasizes collaboration, friendship, and goodwill rather than promotional activities. If you wish to promote a workshop, course, screening, or similar event, please contact the organizers first. Promotional privileges are generally reserved for trusted, long-standing members.

Adventure Reels Tour 2026

Adventure Reels Tour 2026

Thu, Oct 15, 7:30 AM
From Melbourne Social
4.9

Join me for a big night of adventure films at The Capitol on Swanston Street. The Adventure Reels Tour is a curated collection of short action-sports films from around the world — skiing, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, wing-suits — all packed into around two and a half hours on the big screen. The Capitol is one of Melbourne's most beautiful cinemas, so it's a lovely spot to sit back and watch people do slightly unreasonable things on mountains. We'll meet outside Starbucks at 117 Swanston Street at 6:30pm for a quick hello, then walk over to The Capitol together around 6:40pm so we're seated before the films start at 7:00pm. Afterwards we'll head out together and anyone who wants to keep chatting can. This is a casual social meetup so we can go along together — it isn't run by or affiliated with Adventure Reels or The Capitol. Please book your own ticket directly through Humanitix; an RSVP here doesn't include entry. **Who this is for** * Anyone who loves adventure films, the outdoors, or just a good night at the cinema * No experience or fitness required — this one's all sitting down * Coming solo is completely fine, plenty of people do **Links** * Meetup start point: https://maps.app.goo.gl/WGJZqq4kfuuZKiQm7 * Tickets (Humanitix): https://events.humanitix.com/adventure-reels-tour-melbourne-capitol-thurs-15-oct-26-7pm * Adventure Reels Tour: https://adventurereelstour.com.au/ * Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgQDGgAZxtE **Timeline** * 6:30pm – Meet outside Starbucks (117 Swanston Street) and say hello * 6:40pm – Walk over to The Capitol and find seats together * 7:00pm – Films start * 10:00pm – Films finish and the meetup wraps up **Tickets / cost** * You book and pay for your own ticket directly with Humanitix. * Book ahead — these screenings can sell out. * Seating is not allocated, so arriving early gives us a good shot at sitting together. **Transport** * The Capitol is at 113 Swanston Street, right in the city — easy on foot from Flinders Street or Melbourne Central. * Trams along Swanston Street stop practically at the door. * Parking in the CBD is limited and pricey on a Thursday night, so public transport is easier if you can. **Bring** * Your ticket * A jacket **Expect** * Pace: relaxed, mostly sitting in the dark watching films * Vibe: friendly and low-key, a chat before and after * Group style: come as you are, solo attendees very welcome **Important notes** * Please book your own ticket in advance. A Meetup RSVP is not a ticket and doesn't guarantee entry. * This is an independently arranged social meetup, not an official Adventure Reels or Capitol event, and it isn't endorsed by them. * Once the films start we'll be quiet and in our seats, so the socialising happens before and after. * Please follow all venue rules and staff instructions on the night. * If your plans change, please update your RSVP so numbers stay clear.
