Filmonik Melbourne is an open filmmaking group with monthly open-screen screenings. It's like an open mic, but for films. Meet at Eclipse on Tuesday October 27 for our 132nd screening. It's our proven mix of immediate, spontaneous, crafty, fun, inventive and weird short films. You should expect comedies, a bit of drama, animation from time to time, there's generally one suspense/thriller, the occasional music video, some quick and fun trashy comedy, horror or documentary. Most times we don't even know what will be playing. Films are generally under 8 minutes to keep things fast paced and fun, followed by a QA with the director to hear about the process. Films under 4-minutes get close-to-automatic entry, 4-8 minutes films are scheduled first-come first-serve until the allocated time is full. A Night of Silent Cinema: Soviet Montage & Avant-Garde Dreams

Join us for a screening of four landmark works in the history of cinema: Sergei Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin (1925), Dziga Vertov’s Man with a Movie Camera (1929), René Clair’s Entr’acte (1924), and Fernand Léger and Dudley Murphy’s Ballet mécanique (1924). From the revolutionary montage of Battleship Potemkin to the experimental, self-reflexive vision of Man with a Movie Camera, the surrealist absurdity of Entr’acte, and the rhythmic, machine-like visual poetry of Ballet mécanique, these films capture a moment when cinema was breaking free from theatrical conventions and discovering its own artistic language. Expect striking images, radical editing, unexpected rhythms, and unconventional ways of seeing the world. These are films that challenge how we perceive movement, time, bodies, machines, and the possibilities of the cinematic image.
