Filmonik Melbourne is an open filmmaking group with monthly open-screen screenings like an open-mic for films. Meet at Eclipse on Tuesday July 28th for our 130th screening and it's our proven mix of immediate, spontaneous, crafty, fun, inventive and weird short films. You should expect comedies, a bit of drama, animation maybe, there's generally one suspense/thriller, one music video, some fun trash, horror or documentary but sometimes we don't even know what will be playing. Films are generally under 8 minutes to keep things fresh and fun, followed by a quick QA with the director to hear about the process. The Romanian New Wave: Realism, Dark Comedy, and Transcending the Mundane

Join us for a discussion of the Romanian New Wave, one of the most influential movements in contemporary world cinema. This session is a discussion only—there will be no film screening. Participants are encouraged to watch the films beforehand. We'll explore three landmark feature films: The Death of Mr. Lazarescu, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, and Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World. Together, they illustrate the evolution of Romanian cinema from stark social realism to sharp, contemporary satire. We'll also discuss two acclaimed short films, Traffic and Cigarettes and Coffee, which highlight the movement's distinctive style and themes. Whether you're already familiar with Romanian cinema or discovering it for the first time, join us for an engaging conversation about these remarkable films, their directors, and the cultural and historical context that shaped them.

Nirvanna the Band, the Show, the Movie Screening

Join us for a members-only screening of Nirvanna the Band, the Show, the Movie at the intimate Champagne Video Cinema and Bar. We’ll meet for drinks and conversation from **7:30pm**, with the film starting at **8:30pm** on **Friday 14 August**. **Location:** Champagne Video Cinema and Bar, 318 St. Georges Road, Fitzroy North. This is a non-theatrical members-only screening. New members are very welcome — you can join the film club with a **3-month minimum commitment for $45** (just **$15 per film**). Whether you’re a seasoned filmmaker, a casual cinephile, or you simply want somewhere fun to be on a Friday night, **you are absolutely welcome here**. Come say hi, grab a drink, and soak up the vibe. **Note: These screenings are a new initiative for us and we're experimenting with the format. We're looking to have a short film showcase + conversation in place of a feature probably in October** (if you are all ready a film club member there is no need to RSVP at this point).

Hello, This event will be updated with details of the actual film on the Tuesday or Wednesday prior to the event, after Cinema Nova have published their movie schedule. We typically choose a film that starts between 6:30pm and 7:30pm so that we're not all yawning in the bar afterwards. Please read on if you have any questions about tickets, where to sit and where to meet before and after the film. Stay tuned! **--=>+ Meeting Spot +<=--** Outside the clothing store Black Orange. It is inside Lygon Court next to Brunettis. Join the group at the meeting spot 10 minutes before the start time or see us in the cinema, or the bar afterwards. **--=>+ The Film +<=--** TBC on the prior Tuesday or Wednesday after Cinema Nova have published their movie schedule. **--=>+ Tickets +<=--** Everyone will need to buy their own ticket online and in advance. If you want to sit with other group members, there's a tendency for us to pick seats in the back two rows. Those who feel comfortable can catch up in Nova's bar afterward. **--=>+ Afterwards+<=--** We meet in Nova's bar after the movie. Look for us in the area to the left as you go down the steps. Share your thoughts about the film with the group over a drink of your choice. If the bar is closed we typically head across the road to the Wolf's Lair which is out the back of Jimmy Watson's.
