Don't Work for Free! Navigating Contract Gigs, Rev Share & IP

Don't Work for Free! Navigating Contract Gigs, Rev Share & IP

Wed, Jul 22, 10:45 PM
From Women in Games NYC
4.9

Games is a passion industry with an increasingly more difficult barrier to entry. Over the years, many of us have had the same conversations trying to figure out how to navigate "volunteer" projects, unpaid internships, working for equity or rev share, or even the dreaded...working for exposure. The general rule of thumb is DON'T WORK FOR FREE (for other people), but that doesn't mean you always have to get paid in cash for work to be legit. Sometimes there's real value in taking rev share / equity, or having your credit in a game shipped by a reputable studio. So how do you tell whether you're in an actually good situation or whether you're being taken advantage of? If: * You're signing away your IP rights * You're crippling your ability to take on other work * You'll actually be credited in a title at the end of the day * Successful funding down the road will actually lead to money for YOU To dig into all of this, Harris Peskin of ESG Law has generously offered to run a free workshop. We'll cover these topics, plus best practices, red flags to watch for, and have some templates you can take with you. Bring your questions and your war stories 😬 Come learn how to protect yourself before you sign. **Our speaker:** [Harris Peskin, Partner @ ESG Law](https://www.linkedin.com/in/harris-peskin%F0%9F%94%9C-unreal-fest-a57b84b6/) ESG Law: [https://www.linkedin.com/company/esg-law/](https://www.linkedin.com/company/esg-law/) (you do not have to be a woman / femme-identifying to attend this workshop)

The Un-Networking Night: New York

The Un-Networking Night: New York

Thu, Aug 13, 10:00 PM
From Malkant Group
4.8

The only thing you'll pitch is your next UNO card. Most networking events ask you to perform: the elevator pitch, the forced small talk, the business-card shuffle. This one asks you to play. We sit down, start a game, and talk like actual people (with pizza and refreshments on us). Between turns, we'll drop in the questions that quietly matter; how you're positioned, how you're seen in the market, how the right clients would ever find you, what premium buyers actually pay for, and how a stranger becomes a "yes." Your answers feed a live diagnostic as we play, and by the end of the night you walk out with **five personal action plans**: a clear read on where you stand in each area, and exactly how to build it. That's what your ticket gets you: not a talk you sit through, but five working blueprints you leave holding, plus an evening with people who fix things for a living instead of pitching at each other. **Here's who this is for:** you're brilliant at fixing broken systems, optimizing workflows, and turning chaos into order; and outside your own building, nobody knows it. This night is the first step out of that. When it ends, your next move is yours. Take your blueprints into the full build program, or sit down one-on-one with me to scope your own. No pitch, no pressure. Just a good game and the start of a practice the market chooses. **Bring:** yourself, and the way you actually think about your work. We'll handle the rest. **Event Registration Fee: $55.** **[Get your pass here.](https://ops.malkant.com/?fluent-booking=calendar&host=smxdevadmin&event=120min-1)**
