Don't Work for Free! Navigating Contract Gigs, Rev Share & IP

Games is a passion industry with an increasingly more difficult barrier to entry. Over the years, many of us have had the same conversations trying to figure out how to navigate "volunteer" projects, unpaid internships, working for equity or rev share, or even the dreaded...working for exposure. The general rule of thumb is DON'T WORK FOR FREE (for other people), but that doesn't mean you always have to get paid in cash for work to be legit. Sometimes there's real value in taking rev share / equity, or having your credit in a game shipped by a reputable studio. So how do you tell whether you're in an actually good situation or whether you're being taken advantage of? If: * You're signing away your IP rights * You're crippling your ability to take on other work * You'll actually be credited in a title at the end of the day * Successful funding down the road will actually lead to money for YOU To dig into all of this, Harris Peskin of ESG Law has generously offered to run a free workshop. Killer Queen is a cult classic team-based arcade strategy game. It's super easy to learn yet infinitely replayable, and it's also a great way to meet new people. The game will be on freeplay all night. All skill levels are welcome. There's always a handful of experienced players willing to teach the game to newbies. We'll informally make pickup teams throughout the night. Come play a super fun game with an incredible community. 21+ because it's a bar.

Board gamers of all kinds are welcome to our Thursday night board gaming event. **If this will be your first time attending on a Thursday, we highly recommend that you join our [Discord server](https://discord.gg/f3uqDJjEec) to find a scheduled game to join.** The majority of Thursday evening games are pre-scheduled via Discord, but we do leave one or two tables open for unscheduled games—if you would like to play at one of those tables please arrive as close to the 6PM start time as possible to increase the chance that there will be space available. Looking for something more freeform? Try our Friday and Sunday events, which are almost entirely comprised of unscheduled, “pick-up” games for you to play! Entrance is $8, paid to Squarrel Cafe for unlimited gaming for the day. Food and drink are available. Attendees are strongly encouraged to support our host, Squarrel Cafe.

Completely optional.** We're a friendly group of gamers that play everything from Carcassonne & Ticket to Ride to Wingspan & heavier Eurogames! If you don't recognize the games, don't worry, everyone is happy to teach new players the rules. And feel free to bring your own board games if you wish. Between all of us, there's usually a large selection of games to choose from. In order to support our awesome, not-too-loud, well-lit venue, each person must purchase something to eat or a few drinks. ***\*\*\*Again, there is a $15 minimum per person.****\*\*\** *** We always welcome new people & we're all here to have fun, but we do have a few ground rules that we ask everyone to be aware of: * Treat everyone in the group with respect & do not discriminate. However, if you're responsible for ruining someone else's game by spilling a beverage or food on it, the right thing to do is to offer to purchase a new copy for them. Some of the games we bring are out of print so please treat every board game with respect. * If a game is accidentally ruined by a staff member, everyone at the table should pitch in to buy a new one for the owner. How It Works: * **When you arrive we will put you on teams - if you don’t already have one (90% of those attending will not have a team).** * **Each team will be given a list of clues and 75 minutes to head to Grand Central to uncover the mystery of Mary’s demise. The team with the most points wins.** * **Once everyone is back we'll safely socialize where you can share your experiences with the others.** The Theme: Meet Up Mary is a regular on the social circuit in New York. You'd probably know her if you've been out before. She was very personable, friendly and bubbly! Unfortunately Mary met a horrific end at Grand Central and the police need you help to solve her case!
