Introduction to 3D Modeling and Printing
Sat, Jun 13, 5:00 PMIntroduction to 3D Modeling and Printing is back! The course will be split into two portions. The first two hours will focus on the user interfaces for three modeling programs: Tinkercad, OpenSCAD, and Blender. In each program, we'll learn how to create and modify 3D objects. We'll cover how to export geometry (STL) files from each platform and load them into the slicing software, Cura, to generate the instructions (gcode) file for the 3D printer. Finally, we'll talk about how to load that file up into the 3D printer for printing. The second part of the course will be an open workshop where everyone can try modeling something on their own. The instructor will be available to answer questions and assist. Requirements (Please bring a OSX or PC laptop with the following software installed and a mouse with a scroll wheel): tinkercad.com (create a free account to use) openSCAD: http://www.openscad.org/ Blender: https://www.blender.org/download/ Cura: https://ultimaker.com/en/products/cura-software

You're welcome to use our space and hand tools to work on your projects! (Note: 3D printers available if your print completes during the meetup. Sorry, laser and CNC router reserved for members or those who've taken a class.) * If you're interested in joining as a Fat Cat Fab Lab member, in person participation at one of our Open House events is the first step towards becoming a member! See you there!

An Intro to Soldering
Wed, Jun 3, 11:00 PMWelcome to our soldering basics class! This class is for beginners and designed to teach you a few important fundamentals on soldering, an essential skill for anyone interested in electronics or DIY projects. We’ll go over solder types, soldering temperatures, and basic through hole component soldering. You’ll learn techniques and tips on how to properly flow solder into a joint, and how to inspect it to ensure you have a good connection. All of this will be taught on a custom circuit board designed for practicing a variety of different circumstances and techniques, which is yours to take home after the class. No experience is necessary, and all equipment and tools will be provided for you to use during the class. The class will run around 1.5-2 hours.

Protecting Your Ideas: IP for Makers, Builders & Founders
Mon, Jun 1, 10:30 PMJoin us at Fat Cat Fab Lab for a practical presentation on intellectual property and patent law tailored for makers, builders, hardware/software developers, and early-stage founders. Led by New York patent attorney and inventor Stefan Knirr, this session will explore the fundamentals of patents, trademarks, copyrights, and trade secrets through the lens of real-world product development and commercialization. Topics will include: • What patents do — and do not — protect • Provisional vs. non-provisional patent strategies • Public disclosure risks and timing • Protecting prototypes, code, CAD files, branding, and creative assets • Common IP mistakes early-stage builders make • Practical considerations around cost, filing strategy, and commercialization The session is designed to be practical, accessible, and directly relevant to creators developing products, launching startups, collaborating with others, or preparing to bring ideas to market. 6:30–6:45 → Arrival / networking 6:45–7:30 → Main presentation 7:30–8:00 → Audience Q&A + project-specific questions Free and open to the community. Limited seating available.

OpenFold and the Future of Open Foundation Models for Biomolecular Modeling
Thu, Jun 11, 10:00 PMRecent advances in foundation models have begun to reshape what is possible in structural biology and molecular design. In this joint presentation, Woody Sherman and Mohammed AlQuraishi will discuss the scientific vision, organizational model, and technical foundations behind the OpenFold Consortium and OpenFold3. Woody Sherman will introduce the OpenFold Consortium, an open-science effort created to accelerate the development of transparent, extensible, and high-impact AI models for biomolecular research. He will discuss the motivation for building an open ecosystem around next-generation structure and interaction prediction, the importance of community, infrastructure, and funding, and the role of open models in enabling broader innovation across academia, biotech, and pharma. Mohammed AlQuraishi will then present the OpenFold3 foundation model, including its architecture, training strategy, and capabilities for modeling proteins and their interactions with biologically relevant partners. He will discuss how foundation models are evolving beyond static structure prediction toward richer representations of molecular recognition and biological function, as well as the opportunities and remaining challenges in building open, generalizable models for biomolecular systems. Together, they will provide both a strategic and technical perspective on the emerging landscape of open foundation models for biology, and on how these models may help define the next era of AI for drug discovery. 👉 **Join NYAGIM for our 2026 Q2 event** to connect with the local computational chemistry and informatics community.
