Filming Monarch Butterflies

Filming Monarch Butterflies

Sat, Aug 29, 1:00 PM
From Wildlife Filming Club

We are going to film monarch butterflies! Every year, monarch butterflies gather here to prepare for their extraordinary southbound migration to Mexico. Late August is the peak time to see that transition, offering rare opportunities to film colorful close-ups, aerial courtships, and, with some luck, the first signs of their epic mass migration. Other possible sightings include swallows and great blue herons.

Survivalist Series: Introduction to Camp Skills

Survivalist Series: Introduction to Camp Skills

Sat, Sep 5, 12:00 PM
From Wilderness Union Toronto - Outdoor Adventure and Hiking Club
4.7

**Please note the only way to register for this adventure is on [our website.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/intro-bushcraft)** **Behold the profound utility of plants!** Long before rope, tools, and construction materials came off a shelf, it came from the land: twisted from roots, stripped from bark, and spun from plant fiber. This one-day workshop introduces you to the concepts of bushcraft, how to source raw materials straight from the wild and how to make them into things you need to survive. You'll learn to see the forest differently and walk away with the skills (and a few finished pieces) to prove it. **You will learn:** * How to identify and ethically harvest plants * How to process these materials to create survival essentials * Basic structures and tools that can be easily built, to improve wilderness convenience and quality of life. * How to apply bushcraft concepts to meal preparation and cooking. * The principles of sustainable bushcraft: what to take, what to leave, and how to harvest without depleting the source **Who It's For**: Anyone looking to build on their outdoor skills with hands-on, practical craft. No prior experience required, though this pairs well with our Foraging workshop for those looking to round out their plant knowledge. **About this Series**: The Survivalist Series is an expert-led set of courses designed to develop applicable and life-saving skills in the outdoors. Keep your eyes peeled for more courses on many other topics as they become available. **Highlights** **Plant Fiber Cordage:** Twist raw fiber into cordage strong enough to lash a shelter frame or hang a pack. And you will be able to bring some home! **Ethical Harvesting:** Learn to read a plant before you touch it, and how much you can take without setting the population back. **Expert Instruction:** Your amazing expert guide will teach you everything you need to know in a safe and approachable way. **Event cost: $80+HST (for explorer members) - $30 optional transport available.** **Register [here.](https://www.wildernessunion.com/adventures/intro-bushcraft)** **About Wilderness Union** Wilderness Union is deliberate about building an outdoors community that connects you to the life-changing magic of the outdoors and helps you find your people. Members range from 20-40 years old. The group is a mix of GTA locals and newcomers to Toronto from within Canada and abroad. Attendance numbers on Meetup don't reflect our actual event attendance - we typically have 15-20 community members at each event. Large enough that there's someone new to meet but small enough that it's not overwhelming! ***Learn more at our website [www.wildernessunion.com](https://www.wildernessunion.com/)***

Making the case for service design

Making the case for service design

Fri, Aug 21, 10:30 PM
From Service Design Drinks Toronto
4.7

How do you communicate the value of service design at your workplace? Where does your team stand, **and** what is your role within it? We all know service design creates value, but pinpointing exactly *where* your org stands, and what role you should be playing to move it forward, is a different skill entirely. This session is about getting clearer on that. **Format:** Design jam **What to expect:** * A quick icebreaker * Opening context — a fast recap of the article and why it matters * A spotlight share — one person walks us through where their own org sits on the model, and what that's actually looked like in practice * Main activity — working solo, then in pairs, then as a full table * A quick close — one small thing to try shifting this month **To get ahead:** Read the [Service Design Maturity Model article;](https://service-design-network.org/community_article/the-service-design-maturity-model-a-strategic-framework-to-embed-service-design-into-an-organisation) it's a quick one, and it'll give us a shared language for the night. The model breaks organizational SD maturity into five stages Explore, Prove, Scale, Integrate, Thrive) and tracks how a service designer's role shifts through each: from scout > doer > trainer > facilitator > leader. No need to have it all figured out before you arrive. Just come ready to think out loud with a few new people. See you there!
