Green Hairstreak Corridor: Seed Collecting Workshop & Walk

***This is a special hands-on seed collecting workshop and walk where we'll collect seeds for next year's habitat restoration sites - great for beginners and pros alike! You’ll help us collect seeds to grow in our native plant nursery, or you can bring some home seeds to grow on your own!*** Help us collect native seeds to carry us through another season of habitat restoration in the Green Hairstreak Corridor. Folks who join these events help create and expand the ecosystem for this little green gem of a pollinator. We will be touring the Green Hairstreak Corridor, an urban wildlife corridor focused on protecting and building habitat for the Coastal Green Hairstreak Butterfly. We will stop at our various sites and learn about collecting seeds of various native plants. We emphasize biodiverse and ecologically relevant plants, and you will learn about many of our important native plant species. Please dress in long pants, closed-toe shoes, and layers - clothes that might get a little dirty! Bring your own water bottle and sun protection. SAVE the TREES near a large Oakland air polluter

Nearly 90 new trees in the median need TLC. Park at 8000 Edgewater Drive median (off Hegenberger near Oakland Airport) parking lot. We have recently planted trees that need mulch, water and weed removal. These trees are currently alive, so now with this infusion of TLC, they will be safe until winter rains to resume growth. The temperature is likely cooler than most of Oakland as it is near the San Leandro Bay. You will need sun hat, water bottle and closed toe shoes. We will have gloves and water refill and a shade canopy.

Native Plant Nursery Workday

Join the Backyard Nursery Network on the ***fourth Saturday of every month*** and assist us in transplanting, pruning, weeding, seed sowing, and general upkeep of our nursery at McAteer Farm on the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts campus. Nature in the City started the Backyard Nursery Network to preserve native plants like coast buckwheat, seaside daisy, and deer weed as they provide habitat for local species. Growing these plants from resilient native seed genetics ensures the survival of both the endangered plants and our local butterflies, bees, birds, and other wildlife. Most of these plants are going to the Green Hairstreak Corridor planting projects in the Inner Sunset. The workday tasks vary from month to month, but be ready to get your hands dirty! **Getting to the nursery:** * Parking is available in the parking lot off of O'Shaughnessy Blvd. * MUNI lines 44, 48, 52, and 36 all have close-by stops * **From the O'Shaughnessy Blvd. gate:** * Walk along the road * Enter the lower parking lot and find a staircase on the far left side of the parking lot that leads to the track * The nursery is on the far side of the track behind the bleachers. Palou Phelps Park Volunteer Workday

On the first Saturday of every month, we meet at the base of the Palou & Phelps hill and join the Friends of Palou Phelps community group and SF Rec & Park on their volunteer workday. Our workdays will vary every Saturday, but both the hill and the garden will be the focus on these days. SAVE the 24 TREES 4 years old along the tidal canal with mulching, watering, and low branch pruning. etc. Trees for Oakland (TFO) volunteers avoid tree damage via drought and sun with these actions. Please bring closed toe shoes, water bottle and sun protection. TFO will arrange for wood chips, access to water, tools, and for volunteers we provide cold refill water and gloves. .
