Beyond Small Talk – Culture Clash Berlin

Beyond Small Talk – Culture Clash Berlin

Sat, Aug 22, 2:00 PM
From Culture Clash Berlin

🌍 **Culture Clash Berlin** Beyond Small Talk. What can a language reveal about the way we think? Why does "polite" mean something completely different across cultures? How much should family influence our choices? What makes a place feel like home? And why can the same gesture feel warm in one culture and strange in another? **Culture Clash Berlin** is a recurring meetup for curious people who enjoy exploring the ideas, experiences and little cultural differences that shape how we see the world — and each other. Every meetup explores **18 different cultural dimensions**. Instead of staying with just one topic, we move across different aspects of life — with one thought-provoking question for each category. **💬 18 Topics. 18 Questions.** 🗣️ **Language & Communication** What does your language make easier — or harder — to express? 🌍 **Culture & Identity** How much of who you are comes from the cultures you grew up with? 🏛️ **Traditions & Modern Life** Which traditions still matter to you — and which ones should we let go? 👨‍👩‍👧 **Family & Generations** How much influence should family have over the way we live our lives? ❤️ **Love & Dating** What feels romantic in one culture but completely strange in another? 🤝 **Friendship & Social Connection** When does an acquaintance become a real friend? 🍽️ **Hospitality & Food** What does being a good host actually mean? 🎵 **Music & Cultural Memory** What song could tell someone your life story without using words? ⏰ **Time & Punctuality** Is being late really disrespectful — or just culturally relative? 🧍 **Personal Space & Body Language** How close is too close? 💼 **Work & Professional Culture** How much of your personality should you bring to work? 💰 **Money & Status** Why are some cultures comfortable talking about money while others avoid it? 🙏 **Religion & Beliefs** How do traditions and beliefs shape everyday life — even when we don't consider ourselves religious? ⚖️ **Gender & Social Expectations** Which expectations about men and women have shaped you? 🏠 **Home, Migration & Belonging** Can you feel at home in more than one place? 🧓 **Generational Change** What do younger generations understand differently from their parents? 🪞 **Stereotypes & Cultural Misunderstandings** Which stereotype about your culture contains a tiny grain of truth — and which one is completely wrong? 🧠 **Language, Culture & the Way We Think** Does speaking another language actually change who we are? **💬 How does an evening work?** We'll use thought-provoking questions, cultural scenarios, personal stories, music and small-group discussions to get the conversation going. You might find yourself discussing a Persian expression with someone from Spain, comparing dating traditions with someone from Germany, or debating the meaning of "home" with someone who has lived in three different countries. There are no correct answers. The interesting part is discovering why we see the same question so differently. And sometimes the best conversations happen when someone says: *"I've never thought about it that way before."* **🌍 Who is this for?** For people who are genuinely curious about people, cultures, languages, music, society and the way we see the world. You don't need to be an expert. You don't need to come from a multicultural background. You don't need to speak a particular language. Just bring curiosity, an open mind and your own perspective. **Come with a question.** **Leave with a different perspective.** 🌍 **Different backgrounds. Different answers. Better conversations.** ### 📍**Meeting Point & Picnic** We'll meet in front of the boothaus Stella am Lietzensee and then walk together to a nice spot by the lake for our picnic and conversations. 🌿 Bring something to sit on — blankets are very welcome! 🧺 Feel free to also bring a snack or drink to share, but no pressure. 😊

The school was founded in the middle of the 15th century by Iizasa Chōisai Ienao at the Katori Shrine (Katori jingū) and has become the origin of numerous other martial arts schools over the course of its almost 600-year history. The training consists of the continuous repetition of fixed sequences of movements (kata) and includes the use of classic Japanese weapons such as the sword (iai-jutsu, battō-jutsu, ken-jutsu, ryōtō-jutsu, kodachi-jutsu), the long staff (bō-jutsu), the lance (naginata-jutsu) and the spear (sō-jutsu), as well as unarmed disciplines, tactics and spiritual aspects. **The Katori Berlin dojo** is the only official shibu of Otake Nobutoshi-shihan’s dojo Shinbukan in Germany and fully dedicated to the transmission and study of one martial tradition: Tenshinshō-den Katori Shintō-ryū. Through these efforts we aim to contribute to the cultural preservation of this martial tradition. The dojo has one officially appointed shidosha. **Our sensei**: Sebastian Graetz has been active in martial arts since 1997. After almost 15 years of taekwondo in Berlin, he started with Katori Shintō-ryū in Asia in 2014. Since then, he has studied in Japan with Ōtake Risuke-shihan and Ōtake Nobutoshi-shihan, and in Vietnam with Malte Stokhof-shihandai. In 2023, he received his Menkyo license and permission to set up a training group in Berlin the following year.
