DUBLINESES, de James Joyce

***Dublineses*** (en inglés, *Dubliners*) es una colección de quince relatos cortos del escritor [irlandés](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irlanda "Irlanda") [James Joyce](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Joyce "James Joyce") escritos entre 1904 y 1907, pero publicada tras diversas vicisitudes en 1914. Los quince relatos, que en principio habían sido doce, constituyen una representación [realista](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Realismo_literario "Realismo literario"), y aun [naturalista](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naturalismo_(literatura) "Naturalismo (literatura)"), en ocasiones sutilmente burlona, de las clases media y baja irlandesas en el [Dublín](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubl%C3%ADn "Dublín") de los primeros años del siglo XX. En estos relatos, Joyce trata de reflejar la «parálisis» cultural, mental y social que aquejaba a la ciudad, sometida secularmente a los dictados del [Imperio británico](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperio_brit%C3%A1nico "Imperio británico") y de la [Iglesia católica](https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iglesia_cat%C3%B3lica "Iglesia católica"). Gaudí, the Architect of Nature (2-part lecture series)

We will review the most important characteristics of his architecture and talk about the projects he carried out that have made him the most internationally recognized Catalan architect. We will dedicate a class to the Sagrada Familia, its symbolism and iconography and what remains to be built. We'll look at his famous projects like La Pedrera, Casa Batlló and Park Güell, but also explore unknown works such as Casa Botines in León or the unbuilt Missions of Tangier. **Sept. 21:** Introduction and general overview of the course. The life of Gaudí. **Sept. 28:** Five main features of Gaudí's architecture and works. **Oct. 5:** Sagrada Familia. **\*We' won't meet Oct. 12 due to the holiday\*** **Oct. 19:** The mature works: La Pedrera, Casa Batlló, Park Güell, Colònia Güell. ## About Dr. Judith Urbano Dr. Judith Urbano Lorente holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Barcelona. She has been a prominent figure in the academic world, serving as the Vice Dean and Head of Studies at the School of Architecture (ESARQ) at the International University of Catalonia (UIC) from 2008 to 2013, where she also taught from 1997. She has been the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at UIC Barcelona, from 2016 to 2025. Dr. Urbano is the principal researcher of the History, Architecture, and Design Research Group (GRHAD). Her research includes significant projects such as the "La Mansana de la Discòrdia” or the musealization project for the Vic Cathedral and a monograph on the building. As a curator, she has overseen various exhibitions, including "Gaudí in Paris 1910" at UIC, "La Mansana de la Discòrdia" at Casa Lleó Morera, “La Casa Gralla, the Journey of a Monument" at the Museum of the History of Barcelona (MUHBA) or “The painter Fortuny” at the Ateneu Barcelonès. Dr. Urbano specializes in 19th and early 20th-century art, with a focus on eclectic and Art Nouveau architecture. Her doctoral thesis on August Font i Carreras has led to two published monographs: Eclecticism and Architecture: August Font i Carreras (1845-1924) and Eclectic Barcelona. She has presented her work at international conferences and has contributed extensively to various academic journals. Her articles have been published in notable journals such as the Bulletin of the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, Assaig de Teatre, Materia, Del Penedès, Kesse, NewsUIC, Coup de Fouet, Hispania Sacra, Focus: Journal of the City and Regional Planning Department, and Archaeometry, among others. She has also written for The Conversation and has been featured in various prestigious books and academic anthologies.

The Great Gatsby - A Lit Course

Fitzgerald's contemporaries — T.S. Eliot, Edith Wharton, Gertrude Stein — wrote to him in admiration, but the wider public was unmoved. The novel had sold only 25,000 copies by the time of Fitzgerald's death fifteen years later, aged 44, his heart giving out after years of heavy drinking. The novel's resurrection came from an unlikely source. During the Second World War, the Council on Books in Wartime distributed over 150,000 Armed Services Editions to soldiers — and Gatsby found its audience among American troops overseas. Then, in 1945, the critic Lionel Trilling declared Jay Gatsby a symbol of the American Dream itself, an act of critical elevation that lifted the novel into the North American literary canon, where it has remained ever since, its status as a 'classic' further cemented by adoption into high school and college curricula in the 1950s and 60s. What a difference 100 years can make. The Great Gatsby has now sold an estimated 30 million copies worldwide, spawned four feature films, and — in the last two years alone — inspired two major Broadway and West End musical productions. 'The Jazz Age', a term Fitzgerald himself coined, has passed permanently into the global imagination. And yet this novel set in the aftermath of the First World War — that brief, feverish interval of new money, loose morals, and borrowed time — feels less like history and more like a mirror. Jay Gatsby is one of literature's great early architects of the curated public image: a man who reinvented himself from scratch, surrounded that invention with spectacle, and bet everything on a single, doomed idea of who he needed to be. She holds a PhD in English Literature with a focus on the Victorian era, and first caught the bug in poetry courses with Helen Vendler, the noted Harvard critic. She leads literary discussion groups in London for adult readers, guiding close, peer-level conversation rather than lecturing at them. Recent participants have called her “a superlative leader” and her teaching “not only great — it was a gift.” She's lived in L’Eixample since 2022 and sings in the 240-person Barcelona English Choir — its only woman bass.

Bring whatever you feel like reading — a novel, a poem, an essay, a short story, something you wrote yourself, or simply something you've been meaning to read. We'll spend about an hour reading together, each at our own pace. Afterwards, we can come together, share, and have a conversation. 📚 Primera sesión de nuestro Club de Lectura: La asistenta ¡Ponemos en marcha nuestro Club de Lectura! Y para empezar hemos elegido La asistenta, de Freida Mcfadden, una novela que se ha convertido en todo un fenómeno entre los lectores y que recientemente dio el salto a la gran pantalla con una adaptación cinematográfica estrenada en 2025. 🎬📖 La idea de esta primera sesión es muy sencilla: juntarnos en la cafetería, tomar algo y empezar el libro juntos. No hace falta que hayas leído todo el libro ni que vengas preparado con grandes reflexiones. De hecho, queremos que sea una primera toma de contacto tranquila y que cualquiera pueda unirse. Si ya tienes el libro y te apetece adelantarte un poco, puedes venir habiendo leído el prólogo y los primeros capítulos. Y si todavía no lo tienes o prefieres empezar con nosotros, durante la sesión leeremos juntos el prólogo y algunos de los primeros capítulos. **Join us for our September book club discussion of *Free* by Lea Ypi, followed by coffee or drinks nearby.** We’re kicking off the second half of this year’s reading list with Free: Coming of Age at the End of History, a memoir by Lea Ypi about her childhood in communist Albania and her coming of age during the country’s turbulent transition to capitalism. Intelligent, captivating, and often very funny, the book moves through family secrets, childhood misunderstandings, and political upheaval while exploring our ideas about freedom. **Please note that, exceptionally, our September meeting will take place on Thursday, October 2, rather than on the last Friday of the month.** The location will be announced closer to the date, once we have a better idea of the number of attendees, so please RSVP if you’re planning to join us.
