Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (week 1)

Join us for weekly discussions of G. W. F. Hegel's 1807 dialectical quest through consciousness and subjectivity to reason and absolute knowledge, *The Phenomenology of Spirit*. **Required reading for this meeting: Introduction and A. Consciousness: I. Sensory Certainty and II. Perception** *(It is generally advised not to start with Hegel's preface, which we will likely read last.)* I'll be reading the 2018 [Inwood](https://eclass.uoa.gr/modules/document/file.php/PHS414/Georg%20Wilhelm%20Friedrich%20Hegel%20-%20The%20Phenomenology%20of%20Spirit.pdf) translation, but feel free to read any translation or even the original German if you can read German. We plan to meet weekly and work our way through the whole book 20–30 pages at a time. We'll be meeting at the 180 Maiden Lane Public Atrium on the ground floor of the building downtown.

New York Story Night is a literary community event based in Manhattan founded to provide creative writers, amateur and professional alike, a stage on which to share their stories and an audience with which to road test their works. Consider an open mic for stand-up tragedy, stand-up horror, stand-up drama if you will. A night of bedtime stories for adults. **For those who wish to share a story, please arrive before 6:50pm and sign-up for a reading slot.** (Find Aïss at the front of the second floor event space.) For those who wish to be an audience, get a drink, find a favored spot, chit-chat with fellow story lovers if you like! At 7pm story night begins. **Each writer gets 20 minutes in front of the microphone. This week we are back in Central Park! Bring a few refreshments, a blanket, and some writing to share. We will meet by Pilgrim Hill, and exact coordinates will be dropped at the beginning of the event. **Itinerary** People are welcome starting at **2 o'clock**, and you can come and meet your fellow members until 3 when we will start readings. At **3 o'clock** we formally get together as a group to listen to readings from those looking for feedback. * We do not select readers based on order of arrival or a sign-up sheet, so if you have work until late but still want to come and read, you can! * Each reader gets five (5) minutes to read, so please select a section of work which is appropriate for that time limit. * We welcome narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and scripts (be they for screen or stage), so long as it is writing that you're serious about. * We'll then spend another five (5) minutes in discussion. This is time for the listeners to provide feedback on the reading and discussing the craft in general. We welcome (and encourage) constructive criticism, so long as it is done with respect. Articulating Reasons by Robert Brandom Week 2

Can you know what a word means without knowing what it refers to? Articulating Reasons is an introduction to Inferentialism, a view in philosophy of language holding that words get their meaning not from what they point to in the world, but from the role they play in reasoning, i.e. what follows from a claim, and what it commits you to. Championed by Robert Brandom and others as an alternative to the traditional referential view, inferentialism offers a genuinely different picture of how language works. We'll draw out connections to logic, epistemology, and metaphysics along the way, exploring the broader consequences of taking inference, rather than reference, as fundamental. Participants should read the entire reading before attending this in person meeting. We will read pages 55-105 for the second week.
