From Center for Inquiry New York City

This week's DI falls on a national holiday. While the event *will* go on, it will do so at a different location than the previously scheduled Ethical Culture building. Note also that the start time is now 8 PM. The probability of rain and the near certainty of uncomfortably high temperatures has led you esteemed organizers to decide against an outdoor location. We will meet instead in the Moynihan food hall (home of the famous Irish Exit bar, and multiple food stands) in Penn Station.

But out of all the streets in the neighborhood, how did Allen Street become the hub for illicit activity? And what eventually became of it? It's time to turn the page in New York City history and uncover the lewd legacy of one of its most infamous red-light districts. Join [New York Adventure Club](https://www.nyadventureclub.com) as we explore the rise, fall, and resurgence of the Lower East Side's red-light district, one of the most notorious thoroughfares in New York City history. Led by licensed NYC tour guide Robert Brenner, our on-the-ground experience surrounding the Lower East Side's scandalous past will include: * The **incredible story of the Jewish detective** who went undercover to smash the vice rackets * A visit to sites related to **the highest-profile crimes and criminals in the neighborhood's history**, from gangs that controlled the streets, to a serial killer who stalked the working girls of Allen Street, to a mobster whose spectacular murder shook the neighborhood * A discussion along the route of **how societal issues of the day shaped the neighborhood's history**, including anti-Semitism, mass transit, sexism, capitalism, urban renewal, and xenophobia * Tales of **the two hardest working Jewish prostitutes in New York City** — but never on Shabbat * **A stop at remnants** of the neighborhood's former red-light district hiding in plain sight See you there! \*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! \*\*Our experience will conclude at the southeast corner of Allen and Houston Streets **About Robert** Robert Brenner is a licensed New York City tour guide, a certified member of the Guides Association of New York City (GANYC), and an almost lifelong New Yorker. He is currently pursuing a MALS in New York Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center. His mother grew up on the Lower East Side in the good/bad old days—she would plotz if she saw this tour. This event will be limited to **20 members only** and will include museum admission, docent-led tours, and additional museum benefits. ## 🎨 FEATURED EXHIBITION #1 *Old Masters and New Amsterdam* Step back into the world of **17th-century New Amsterdam**, where early New York first began to take shape. This beautiful exhibition explores the connection between: * Dutch Golden Age painting * Early colonial New York * Trade, culture, immigration, and daily life in the young city Featuring remarkable European works alongside historical objects, this exhibition offers a rare chance to experience the artistic and cultural atmosphere that helped shape New York itself. Accompanying the exhibition is a digital reimagining of the 1660 Castello Plan of New Amsterdam. Created in partnership with the New Amsterdam History Center, this interactive map lets visitors explore sites in the 17th century city, including a house where enslaved Africans lived, the original City Hall, and the Indian Trading House. *Curated by Russell Shorto, Director of the New Amsterdam Project at The New York Historical, and Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., Senior Advisor to The Leiden Collection.* Exactly 400 years ago the Dutch founded the city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. In Europe at that same time they were revolutionizing art, with Rembrandt and his contemporaries turning a keen eye to the world around them. This first-of-its-kind exhibition uses their paintings to help us envision life in the little Dutch settlement that would become New York. With works by Rembrandt van Rijn, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen, many of them never before shown in New York, the exhibition will dazzle and delight viewers. Let the Old Masters introduce you to New Amsterdam. Wheelock Jr., Senior Advisor to The Leiden Collection.* ## 👠 FEATURED EXHIBITION #2 *The Weitzman Shoe Museum* From elegance and craftsmanship to fashion and identity, *The Weitzman Shoe Museum* explores the fascinating history of footwear and design. This exhibition highlights: * Historic and designer shoes * Fashion innovation * Cultural trends through the decades * The artistry and storytelling behind iconic footwear A truly unique and visually engaging experience. Everyone on the planet—with few exceptions—wears something on their feet to protect them from the earth. Yet the humble shoe also can be an object of desire, display, and deliberation, transcending its utilitarian purpose. Shoes can be sculptural, serve as historic artifacts, or call up abstract considerations—such as the freighted meanings of femininity, power, domination, and aspiration—for both women and men alike. Renowned shoe designer Stuart Weitzman and businesswoman and philanthropist Jane Gershon Weitzman have assembled a stunning collection of footwear—from historical examples of workaday shoes to Stuart Weitzman's own creations to the many "fantasy shoes" that Jane Gershon Weitzman commissioned from artists to display in her husband's store windows. This extraordinary donation finds a home in our soaring new Weitzman Shoe Museum. Taken together, these objects encompass not only a history of fashion but also a history of consumption, celebrity, and the ebb and flow of American industry. # 👥 PRIVATE GROUP TOUR EXPERIENCE This visit will feature: ✔ **Two private docents** ✔ Smaller touring groups for a more personal experience ✔ Guided exploration of both exhibitions Our tours will consist of: * Approximately **30 minutes per exhibition** * Small docent-led group discussions * Time afterward to independently explore the museum # 🎟️ COST ## 💲 $25 Per Person Your admission includes: ✔ Museum Admission ✔ Private Group Tour ✔ Access to all museum exhibitions ✔ 10% Discount at the Museum Store ⚠️ **Museum Members:** If you are already a member of the New York Historical Society, please message me directly regarding special member pricing. # 🕐 SCHEDULE 12:45 PM — Meet in the Main Lobby 1:00 PM — Begin Group Tour 3:00 PM — Event Concludes *** # ⚠️ IMPORTANT INFORMATION * This event is limited to **20 members only** * RSVP “YES” only if you fully intend to attend * Due to the special group arrangements and docent scheduling, late cancellations may affect membership status under our Rules & Regulations # 🌟 FINAL NOTE This promises to be a truly wonderful afternoon blending: 🎨 Fine Art 🏛 New York History 👠 Fashion & Design 👥 Great Conversation & Company We look forward to seeing you there!
