Soace is set aside for new group members and first timers: Email me at hankorenstein@gmail.com if you land on the waiting list to request a spot. The tour is free with donations warmly accepted at the end via cash, venmo or zelle. **DESCRIPTION:** This is one of my favorite tours for New York history, architecture and New York stories! Join us before the tour for a free Carnegie Hall Community Concert from 6pm - 7pm at Madison Square Park. **Note: For this event the live music is before the tour so technically optional but highly recommended.** **TOUR OVERVIEW** En route to Gramercy Park, we'll see some of the spectacular architecture of the Ladies Mile Historic District along with Theodore Roosevelt's birthplace. Tilden. Tilden has figured prominently in history not only as because he helped establish the NY Public Library but as a candidate for President in whose election defeat in 1876 is perhaps the most controversial in American History. As we stroll towards Union Square, we'll visit the street known as "Block Beautiful" and pass by one of NYC's oldest taverns from the 1860s. For the grand finale we'll end back at Madison Square to learn about the iconic buildings there, including the Flatiron Building, Metropolitan Life Tower, and the New York Life building which occupies the site of the original building known as Madison Square Garden. The park itself has an interesting history that includes the story of a famous architect who was murdered inside one of his creations. **SCHEDULE:** **4:45pm - 5:45pm**: Optional Happy Hour at John Doe Craft Bar and Kitchen, 28th Street & 5th Avenue. **If you would like to meet as a group before the music starts:** **5:45pm by the Farragut Monument on the north end of the park** (pictured above, mid-park, nearest cross streets are 25th and 26th Streets). **6:00pm - 7:00 pm**: Enjoy the music (for the lawn you may want to bring something to sit on). There are benches throughout the park. **7:00pm** (note the music is scheduled to continue to 7:30pm) *Meet by the Farragut monument when the concert ends (same location as the 5:45pm meeting place).* **7:00pm - 8:30pm**: Guided walking tour ending at 23rd Street convenient to the N/R/6/F/M subways. **About the Performers:** Led by multiple Grammy-winning guitarist and vocalist **Clay Ross**, the **American Patchwork Quartet** (APQ) blends timeless American folk song with jazz, country twang, West African influences, and East Asian ornamentation. It’s a modern American musical mosaic that recently earned the group’s debut recording a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. Alongside Ross, the APQ features **Falu**, an 11th-generation Hindustani classical vocalist; **Moto Fukushima**, an internationally acclaimed jazz bassist; and **Koleby Royston**, an emerging jazz drummer with chops and artistry rooted in African American church traditions. **Restrooms and food**: You may want to bring something to eat and be sure to take care of business before the tour. In the immediate area there's **Eataly** which also has an outdoor vendor and the **Whole Foods Market at 28th Street and Madison Ave.**, 2 blocks north of the park and just minutes from our meeting place. They have a cafe/restaurant + restrooms. The original Shake Shack is outdoors on the south end of Madison Square Park (it will be busy). Behind-the-Scenes @ Saint Thomas Church with Exclusive Bell Tower Climb
Sat, Jul 18, 5:00 PMTickets: $45.25 ( incl. $5.25 fees ) (advance registration required) Click the link below to officially register for this experience: [https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1979308295393](https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1979308295393) With Lower Manhattan's population bursting at the seams by the 1860s, the parish of Saint Thomas Church decided to move north and build a new church in the Gothic style on Fifth Avenue and 53rd Street — at that time, a quiet and rural tract. Fast forward to today and the congregation's fourth church — built at that same location in 1913 — still stands. It's time to explore the historic halls, rooms, and tower of one of New York's most notable churches in a way few others have ever before. Join [New York Adventure Club](http://www.nyadventureclub.com/) for an exclusive tour and bell tower climb at [Saint Thomas Church](http://www.saintthomaschurch.org/), a century-old church on Fifth Avenue built in the French High Gothic style and designed by the architectural firm of Cram, Goodhue, and Ferguson. Led by a Saint Thomas Church tour guide, our special experience throughout the historic church will include: * The **history and story of Saint Thomas Church**, from why the first church was built so far uptown in the 1820s to how their famed Choir of Men and Boys got its start * A discussion around the most historic elements in the church including the magnificent **80-foot high reredos**, one of the largest in the world * **Special access** through various historic spaces and chambers in the church that are usually not accessible to the public * **An exclusive trip up the church’s historic bell tower** for unique vantage points of the main sanctuary, church bells room, and attic above the nave — a total of nearly 95 feet [Click here](https://nyadventureclub.com/gallery/30521136) to see pictures from one of our last visits to Saint Thomas Church! See you there! \*If you plan on participating in the bell tower climb in the second half of the tour, please bring water and wear a comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking and stair climbing \*\*Please note that the spiral stairwells up the bell tower are quite narrow, and can be uncomfortable for those with claustrophobia — if you choose to not ascend the church stairs, you may wait on the ground floor for the group to return Disclaimer By attending a New York Adventure Club experience, you accept our [terms of service](https://about.nyadventureclub.com/terms). Those on the wait list will NOT be moved to the going list automatically. I do NOT believe that the Meetup waitlist works well for a number of reasons. IF APPLICABLE, ALWAYS JOIN THE WAIT LIST WITH LOW PRIORITY WHICH IS FREE. IF THERE IS A WAITLIST, IT APPEARS MEETUP WILL ASK YOU IF YOU WANT TO JOIN MEETUP + BUT IN SMALLER LETTERS AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE YOU CAN CLICK CONTINUE WITH THE FREE PLAN. There is NEVER a need to pay extra to use Meetup's High Priority wait list classification for this group. THERE IS ALWAYS A MONEY BACK GUARANTEE IF YOU FEEL I HAVE NOT EARNED YOUR CONTRIBUTION. You can contribute whatever you want at the BEGINNING of an event IN CASH. (On most events, I will NOT accept any monetary contributions). I bet you thought I forgot the description of the event! I didn't-I just wanted to make sure you understand how we do things so you are comfortable with that.
