The Writing Group is back at Lovebirds – join us! Craft is in session. **Itinerary** Our social hour starts at **6 o'clock**, and you can come and meet other writers, get a drink, socialize and hang out as you like until 7 when we will start readings. At **7 o'clock** we formally get together as a group to listen to readings from those looking for feedback. * We do not select readers based on order of arrival or a sign-up sheet, so if you have work until late but still want to come and read, you can! * Each reader gets five (5) minutes to read, so please select a section of work which is appropriate for that time limit. * We welcome narrative prose (fiction and non-fiction), poetry, and scripts (be they for screen or stage), so long as it is writing that you're serious about. * We'll then spend another five (5) minutes in discussion. This is time for the listeners to provide feedback on the reading and discussing the craft in general. We welcome (and encourage) constructive criticism, so long as it is done with respect. This is just as important as the reading, and is done as an open conversation not lead by the reader or the host, so no hand raising required! * We try to get to as many people who want to read as we can, so if there are a lot of attendees we will be very strict on time. * We take a short break at **8 o'clock** . Please join us at Cornerstone Tavern, 961 2nd Ave, New York, NY (51st and 2nd) for great conversation, laughs, and friendship. Look for our signs, and listen for the laughter. We are often in the back of Cornerstone behind the curtain, which is actually a different restaurant called the Stags Head. We start at 7pm, but feel free to come early before happy hour ends at 7. People usually start to drift in by 6:30pm.

Articulating Reasons is an introduction to Inferentialism, a view in philosophy of language holding that words get their meaning not from what they point to in the world, but from the role they play in reasoning, i.e. what follows from a claim, and what it commits you to. Championed by Robert Brandom and others as an alternative to the traditional referential view, inferentialism offers a genuinely different picture of how language works. We'll draw out connections to logic, epistemology, and metaphysics along the way, exploring the broader consequences of taking inference, rather than reference, as fundamental. Participants should read the entire reading before attending this in person meeting. We will read pages 105-155 for the third week. Empricism and the Philosophy of Mind Week 1

The early analytic tradition combined empiricism, which had been present in philosophy for some time, with the new tools of logic in an attempt to place mathematics, science, and philosophy more broadly on a firmer foundation than ever before. By the middle of the twentieth century, these initial ambitions seemed overly extravagant, as many of the problems that had long plagued empiricism were resurfacing. In 1956, Wilfrid Sellars responded to this state of affairs with *Empiricism and the Philosophy of Mind*, encouraging analytic philosophy to enter its Kantian phase and move beyond a Humean empiricism. His central target was the “Myth of the Given,” the idea that experience can justify belief without already involving concepts. The work was highly influential on Richard Rorty and Robert Brandom, who later wrote the introduction and study guide, respectively, for the 1997 edition, and who helped usher in a new wave of ideas in the analytic tradition. Participants should read the entire reading before attending this in person meeting. We will read pages 1-64 for the first week which is equivalent to the intro and Chapters 1-6. Join us on **Saturday morning** **(10 am)** at **[Melting Cups Café](https://www.meltingcups.com/)** Arrive, grab a drink ☕️, pastry 🥐 or both, and settle in the art gallery area (back) where the comfy couches are. Around 10:15 a.m., we’ll have casual introductions sharing what books we are reading. 📖🤓 We’ll wrap up by noon when the café gets busier. We'll try to keep this a recurring event through the Fall.
