We ascend toward **Hadleigh Castle**, perched atop a ridge with captivating views over the Thames Estuary. Built in the 13th century, the castle was a strategic defensive position and later immortalised in a painting by John Constable. We pause to soak in the panoramic views and immerse ourselves in Essex’s medieval past that has inspired artists and writers for centuries. Continuing along the **Thames Estuary Path**, we journey toward **Two Tree Island**, a 634-acre nature reserve surrounded by saltmarsh and tidal mudflats. This peaceful island is crucial for various bird species, providing winter refuge for migratory birds. It is a haven for birdlife, including avocets, brent geese, and Mediterranean gulls. Finally, we arrive in **Leigh-on-Sea**, a charming seaside town with a proud fishing heritage that still continues today. The first stone of Corfe Castle was laid more than 1,000 years ago and since then it has been at the centre of battles, plots and mysteries. It has been a treasury, military garrison, royal residence and family home. On this one-day hike, we'll discover this iconic medieval skyscraper standing 21 metres tall, on the top of a 55-metre-high hill. Corfe Castle dominates the skyline of the Purbecks for miles around and the views are simply breathtaking. Our trail will follow the Purbeck Way, taking in the eastern end of the 95-mile long Jurassic Coast UNESCO World Heritage Site. We'll visit the iconic chalk formations, known as Old Harry Rocks, and admire stunning panoramic views of Studland Bay, Poole Harbour and the Dorset coast. **This hike is suitable for BEGINNERS** – a great way to experience hiking before joining our more difficult trips! 🤩 **HIKE HIGHLIGHTS** * Walk on the golden sands of Studland Bay and Knoll Beach * Visit the famous chalk formations, known as Old Harry Rocks. According to legend, the 65 million-year-old chalk outcrops were named Old Harry as a euphemism for the devil, who allegedly used to nap on the rocks. Part of our route follows the ancient **Ridgeway Trail**, a 5,000-year-old trading path often called Britain’s oldest road. From these high points we enjoy sweeping views across the Vale of Aldbury and the rolling Chiltern countryside. Midway we reach **Ivinghoe Beacon**, a striking hilltop once used for signalling beacons and now a superb viewpoint across the region. It has featured in TV classics like The Avengers and The Saint. From here, the **147m-long White Lion** chalk carving at Whipsnade can be seen across the valley, etched into the hillside and visible for miles. The trail then continues through the **Ashridge Estate**, former seat of the Dukes of Bridgewater, where we pass the 33m **Bridgewater Monument** built in 1832. Through the ages, it has been home to Iron Age farmers, Romans, royalty and archbishops. From here our route leads into the tranquil woods and grasslands of the Kentish countryside, reaching **Shoreham** before following the **Darent Valley Path** into the heart of the valley. The trail takes us into the beautiful **Lullingstone Country Park**, internationally important for its collection of ancient trees. Beech, ash, oak, sweet chestnut and hornbeam all thrive here, with some specimens thought to be over 800 years old. Emerging from the woodland, we arrive at **Lullingstone Castle**, set beside its peaceful lake, before continuing to the site of **Lullingstone Roman Villa** — a rare survival of a Roman estate house first built around 100 AD. From here we continue through rolling Kent fields, rewarded with views of the impressive **Eynsford Rail Viaduct**, its nine red-brick arches towering 22 metres above the valley floor. Our hike concludes in the charming village of **Eynsford**, where we explore the evocative ruins of **Eynsford Castle**, a Norman stronghold built in 1088. Jill was originally built in Brighton and moved here by horses and oxen, while Jack is the only “male” windmill in England. From the ridge the views open wide, stretching inland across the Weald and southwards to the English Channel. The trail follows the undulating ridge to **Ditchling Beacon (248m)** — once an Iron Age hill fort and one of the highest points in South East England. In 1588 it formed part of the beacon chain that warned of the Spanish Armada. Today it rewards us with panoramic views across Sussex and the Downs, with the hills rolling away beautifully in every direction. We continue over gentle peaks before dropping to the **River Ouse**, which guides us into **Lewes**. Our finale is a dramatic entrance through the **Castle Gate**, part of William the Conqueror’s 11th-century fortress.
