Winter Grit & City Lights
Sun, Jul 12, 6:00 AMStart Time: 4:00 pm Start/Finish: Holbeach Ave Carpark, Tempe Distance: Approx. 40–45km Grade: Medium (Night riding / Urban navigation) Communications: All comms will be managed here on MeetUp, so keep an eye on the Comments section for any updates. Please update your RSVP if you cannot make it, so others have a chance to attend this numbers-limited ride. Looking to shake off the winter blues with a bit of grit, urban exploring, and an excellent reward at the end? This is a late afternoon transitioning into a proper night ride, capturing the city lights from the saddle. We’ll depart Tempe at 4:00 pm sharp, snaking our way through Mascot, Alexandria, and Erskineville to hit the Wilson St Cycleway. From there, we roll into Pyrmont and hug the sparkling harbour front, rolling into Darling Square for a brief pit stop to catch our breath. The second half of the loop takes us past Circular Quay, down the Pitt St Cycleway, and navigates back south through Central, Redfern, and Waterloo. We’ll link up with the Bourke St Cycleway, heading straight for a well-earned, steaming-hot Malaysian dinner in Mascot—a perfect warm-up and send-off before the final short spin back to the Holbeach Ave carpark. Important Notes: Lights: Serious, high-quality front and rear night lights are mandatory. No faint commuter flashers, please - you need to see and be seen. If you have niggling vision problems - this ride is not for you. The Vibe: This one is not for the faint-hearted. It will be cold, and it will be dark. Good eyesight, urban riding confidence, and a healthy dose of courage and grit are required. The Rule: Strictly no weather whingers and no whiners allowed! Lol. Dress in layers, bring your winter stamina, and let's embrace the chill. Numbers: Nice and tight 7 riders at most, so be in quick. Sunday is deliberately chosen as it's a quieter in the city, which makes it a more pleasant ride overall. A welcoming day out where the focus is all about fun, friendships and fresh air. Every extra seat means another person gets to join. Fewer cars, easier logistics and a more social, fun start to the day. Carpooling is also a great way to meet people before the hike even begins, share a few laughs, get to know each other, and arrive together. It’s simple, social, and one of the best parts of the experience 🌿 \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- 👉 **For Drivers** If you’ve got spare seats, offering a lift makes a big difference. It helps others join, reduces parking stress and makes the ride more enjoyable from the start. 👉 **For Passengers** Passengers are to contact drivers directly using the details provided in the carpool sheet (linked at the top of the description). The sheet shows information from carpooler tickets (Drivers Offering Seats). ✨ **Best practice:** Try to organise your ride before purchasing a ticket to avoid last-minute stress. **Please note:** Drivers and passengers should stick to the arrangements they make. We do not recommend swapping drivers or cars after you’ve agreed on a ride. If you do decide to change, please make sure all parties are clearly informed and agree to avoid confusion. If a driver forgets, gets mixed up, or doesn’t pick you up, Social Hikes Australia (and your driver) are **not liable** for any inconvenience caused. For this reason, it is best to keep things simple with the driver you first arranged with. ⚠️ **Important Notes** * Please stick with the carpool arrangement you agree on. * Avoid swapping drivers unless everyone is clearly informed and agrees. * Petrol, parking, and other costs are not included in the ticket price. These should be agreed upon directly between the driver and passengers. * Social Hikes Australia is not responsible for any issues with private carpool arrangements. 📍 **Pick-Up Info** Drivers will share their preferred pick-up locations, such as major train stations. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **🤩 Why Join?** 🌟 Make new friends in a relaxed, casual way. 🌟Enjoy nature and fresh air while meeting like-minded people your age 🌟Friendly vibes full of laughs, chats and good times guaranteed 🌟You never know. Tickets cannot be transferred to another hike unless agreed with the organisers. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **🌧 Rain Policy** If the forecast shows over 15 mm in 6 hours or 20+ mm during the day, we may postpone or adjust the hike to keep things safe and enjoyable. Slippery trails, flooding, and poor visibility are no fun or safe. We’ll also reschedule for thunderstorms or if trails are still soaked from heavy rain the days before. Light rain (under 5 mm/hour) is usually fine. We’ll check each hike case-by-case. Safety first 🌿 If it changes and gets heavier, we’ll get rescheduled. \-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\- **💸 Where Your Contribution Goes:** Advertising and outreach – helping us bring in new people to every event. Movie & Buffet Dinner Night; VIP Private Screening of "500 DAYS IN THE WILD"
Sun, Jul 5, 5:15 AMSocial Event - Movie & Dinner Night; We have organised a VIP Private Screening of the award winning movie; "500 DAYS IN THE WILD". The 2-hour documentary weaves together adventure, personal reflections, stunning wildlife, and human connection on the rigorous and beautiful TCT Trail, stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast, as well as the Arctic Ocean. 500 Days in the Wild dives deeply into both the physical and emotional travails of tackling an almost impossible adventure. 500 Days surprises with cinematic action, intimate experiences, and visual poetry. 500 Days In The Wild follows the epic 6-year journey of filmmaker Dianne Whelan as she sets out to reconnect with nature and become the first person to travel the world's longest trail. The 24,000 km Trans Canada Trail stretches across the continent of North America, connecting the Atlantic, Arctic and Pacific oceans. It is the longest trail in the world. For six years filmmaker Dianne Whelan traveled the entirety of the land and water trails, the only person to ever accomplish this journey. 500 Days (which is 12,000 hours) in the Wild recounts Dianne's journey by bike, canoe, skis, snowshoes and on foot and her cross-cultural visits with those who live close to the land. This feature doc culled from 800 hours of footage is an intricate weave of adventure film, personal reflection and stunning captures of wildlife and landscapes. Using humour, adventure, beautiful cinematography and a great soundtrack (including songs from Joni Mitchell, First Aid Kit, Xavier Rudd, and The Tragically Hip), 500 Days in the Wild will entertain audiences and inspire hope for the future. She started out alone, disillusioned with state of the world, to look for different ways of caring for the land and for each other. She ended the journey a bit wiser, more hopeful, in love and with a passion to share this story with you. This is an unforgettable journey and an unforgettable film.
