Beginning tango dance with Felipe and Ayano (series of three classes)

Felipe Martinez and Ayano Yoneda are back to teach tango in Berkeley! Felipe and Ayano teach challenging, fun classes where everyone is encouraged to lead and follow. In Tango 101, they introduce lead-follow technique and the fundamental structures of tango. No partner necessary; the teachers encourage people to switch partners throughout the class. These classes are taught using the terms “leaders” and “followers,” and are inclusive to queer, trans, and non-binary people. Tango teacher Carrie Field will be teaching at the Berkeley City Club for three dates only! The beginner classes will focus on basic tango steps and moves. The teacher leads us through tango exercises and invites us to explore how the body moves. The intermediate classes will offer individual and partner exercises using common tango movements and patterns to offer anatomical, mechanical and sensation insight. Carrie’s classes are influenced by her experience in Pilates, Gyrotonics and Yoga. She writes, “I hope to offer insight that enhances physical presence with yourself and your partner. These tango classes will be influenced by Tango Inform, which is a collection of exercises to prepare the body specifically for tango.” No partner necessary. Thursday Night Irish Set Dancing at the Plough and Stars

Come and take part in our decades-long tradition of Irish partner dancing on Thursday nights at the most authentic, most famous, and coziest Irish pub on the West Coast. Join us for a free tango practica at the Hillside Club in north Berkeley! DJ Estercita spins traditional tango tunes and alternative music. Sunday, May 31st 7:00-10:00 pm No stiletto heels are allowed at the Hillside Club, to protect the wooden floor. Please wear either flat dance shoes or dance shoes with low, thick heels, such as character shoes or west-coast swing shoes. Socks or sneakers are fine too. This is a queer-friendly event where everyone is welcome to lead and follow. Role-switching is encouraged. We do not have a dance class at this event, but beginners are welcome. Talk with someone you haven't met before, and ask questions! We encourage practicing at this practica. Everyone is free to ask anyone to dance. If someone asks you to dance, you are always free to say "yes" or "no." BYOB: Beer and wine only. No hard alcohol. All ages welcome. Bring your water bottles!
